No compromise with DHD(J): Santosh Mohan Dev

NEW DELHI, May 30: Union Minister for Heavy Industries Santosh Mohan Dev today ruled out any compromise with Black Widow militants who have virtually created terror in the North Cachar Hills of Asom. “A handful of DHD(J) militants have unleashed violence in the hill district and there should not be any compromise while dealing with them with a firm hand,” he said while addressing a press meet here today.
The Union Minister said that more security forces are being deployed in the NC Hills to ensure smooth execution of the Railway Broad Gauge project and the Express Highway project. The minister is going to meet the Defence Minister and the Railway Minister next week to discuss the present situation in the district. Meanwhile, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned Rs 2.4 crore for repairing the Silchar-Kalain road, the Union Minister informed the press. An additional amount of Rs 2.5 crore is expected to be sanctioned for this purpose soon, he added.
On the other hand, BJP’s State President Ramen Deka blamed the State Government for the prevailing situation in NC Hills. He said the ensuing two-day national executive meeting of the BJP will take up the matter of internal security in Asom and the State Government’s role in the execution of the Lumding-Silchar BG project.

HSLC results declared, Monimoy tops, Mayuri does it in Second
Monimoy Bujarbaruah of Noonmati Jatiya Vidyalay tops the High Schools Leaving Certificate Examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam in February and March, 2008.According to the results available, Monimoy is followed by Mayuri Kalita of Soneswar Puthimari Higher Secondary School in Kamrup districtw while the third position goes to Rituraj Hazarika of Ananda Vidya Niketan High School of Nalbari, Jannatul Firdousi from Hatsingimari of Dhubri and Palashjyoti Baruah of Silapathar Don Bosco in Dhemaji district.Altogether 107 candidates have occupied the top ten positions—all they are hailing from Kamrup, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sonitpur and Barpeta districts. Altogether 1,40,618 candidates have cleared the examination out of 2, 39,606 and the percentage of successful candidates stands at 58.68, a ten year high this time. Last year the percentage was 54.93%. Altogether 17,084 candidates have secured first division while the number of candidate4s placed in second division is 29,820.In the high Madrassa examinations, top position goes to Md Mustafa Ahmded from the Kawoimari Alhaj Nurul Hussain High Maddrassa of Nagaon district. Second one is Shahjamal Haque of Balbari High Maddrassa in Darrang district while the third position is occupied by Aakrarul Islam from Basbari Bangaljhar High Maddrassa in Goalpara district.

Silchar may get India-England ODI
ACA to back Silchar pleaGuwahati, May 25: The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has decided to recommend the District Sports Association of Silchar’s appeal to the BCCI to grant it a one-day international venue status.At the ACA’s governing body meeting in Hojai on Saturday, the issue on Silchar’s appeal to host the India-England ODI at Satindra Mohan Dev Stadium in December was discussed.
Officials contended that since the BCCI was the competent authority to recognise ODI venues in consultation with the ICC, the ACA would recommend Silchar’s case to the BCCI.“If the BCCI recognises the venue observing the necessary formalities, we will consider allotment of a match in Silchar,” ACA secretary Bikash Baruah said, elaborating on the governing body meeting’s resolution.With the installation of floodlights in the 30,000-capacity stadium, the DSA of Silchar has been pleading with the ACA for allotment of an international match there.
Though the stadium and associated amenities in Silchar meets the requirement for hosting an ODI match, the Barak Valley town falls short of accommodation facilities in compliance with the ICC provisions.Silchar lacks the five-star accommodations that the ICC prefers in ODI centres.However, even Guwahati does not have five-star hotels, but has been hosting ODIs since 1983, accommodating the teams in some of the best available hotels in the city. Silchar is also lagging behind as far as flight connectivity is concerned.
The governing body has also approved of the introduction of elite and plate groups in the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy senior inter-district cricket tournament in conformity with the BCCI’s Ranji Trophy competition rules. Babudom blocks Silchar makeover

A Rs 183-crore project to renovate the principal road and underground drainage system in Silchar has been hanging fire with civic organisations unable to decide who exactly to blame for the delay.
“Hassles one after the other began to surface as we geared up to give this project a go-ahead,” said Anjan Chanda, the executive engineer of the state PWD (national highway wing), entrusted with the task of renovating the link road.
The 2.87-km road runs from Ranghirkhari in the south to Club Road in the north, linking Silchar town with National Highways 53 and 54 and to Imphal and Aizawl.
The road transport and national highways ministry sanctioned Rs 5.62 crore for the 2.87-km-long stretch and another Rs 177 crore was granted by the Union urban development ministry for construction of a drainage network topped by footpaths along a 24-km-long stretch.
Both projects were slated to begin simultaneously till the civic organisations found it difficult to begin work without blaming each other.
Chanda blamed the public health engineering department for delays in replacement of drinking water pipes and ASEB’s inaction in removing transformers and high-tension pylons flanking the route.
The National Buildings Construction Corporation Ltd (NBCC), which bagged the contract for laying the drainage network, kicked off another controversy when it said it would begin construction of drains only from the side of the road where there were no encroachers — implying that encroachment was not their problem.
Following instructions from Union minister of state for heavy industries and Silchar MP Sontosh Mohan Dev, Ganguli ordered the land settlement staff to survey the link road again, sending a clear signal to encroachers that this time the government would act tough.
Chanda said the construction was likely to begin in a few weeks’ time and the road would be ready by September.
The residents, however, observed a bandh on May 3 to protest against non-performance of the PWD and PHE department, as well as the NBCC and service providers like BSNL and ASEB.
If political pundits are to be believed, the displeasure could be reflected in the next Lok Sabha elections. Source: Telegraph India

Santosh Mohan Dev moves PM, gets panel formed

The Centre today assured Union Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise Minister Santosh Mohan Dev that it would ensure security to the people working at the two connectivity projects — the NH-54 and the Railway Gauge Conversion — in North Cachar Hills where killings by suspected DHD(J) militants continue unabated.
According sources, in the Cabinet meeting today, Dev sought intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh into the situation in NC Hills where as many as 11 people were killed today putting the works of the two connectivity projects to a grinding halt. Without wasting any time, the Prime Minister asked his security advisor MK Narayanan to look into the matter and take immediate action whatever necessary. This was followed by a meeting between Dev and Narayanan during which the latter told Dev that he had already formed a core committee to look into the security aspects of workers of the two national projects in NC Hills. Narayanan told Dev that he would make the members of the committee public tomorrow. Narayanan further assured Dev that the Centre would ensure tight security at the project sites so as to ensure their timely completion.
Narayanan further said that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and the Home Commissioner have been asked to send a detailed report on NC Hills situation to the Centre. “They have been asked to keep in touch with the Centre,” he added.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Committee for Railways Chairman Basudev Acharya blamed it on the State Government for its failure to provide security to the workers at the project sites in NC Hills. Acharya also put the blame on the Centre as the two connectivity projects are national projects.
Surprisingly, the Rail Bhavan had no information on today’s attack on a train by militants in NC Hills. As Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav is in Singapore, this correspondent contacted the Railway Board Chairman as if to inform him of the incident. The Railway Board Chairman said that he would have to collect the information from the NF Railway.

A meeting was organised in this connection on the university campus under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor Tapadhir Bhattacharjee. Officials of the District Sports Associations of Silchar, Hailakandi and Karimganj attended the meeting, while some veteran players were also present.
The speakers urged the university officials to take steps to pave the way for the development of sports infrastructure in various colleges of Barak Valley and the adjoining hill districts. They proposed that the university make provisions for special funds to develop sports infrastructure at educational institutions under Assam University to encourage college students to participate in sports. Retired FIFA referee Mrinal Kanti Roy, sports organiser-cum-veteran athlete Samsul Haque Barbhuiya and the president and secretaries of district sports associations of Hailakandi and Karimganj addressed the meeting.

Silchar May 20: A pregnant woman filling in for a relative was among five road workers killed in an avalanche on hill they were cutting in a Cachar village this afternoon.
Around 12, villagers of Srinagar, about 5km from Silchar, heard a huge roar followed by wails from the hill where labourers engaged by the Cachar District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) were collecting soil for laying a road to Rajartilla village.
“Suddenly there was a roar, and before we could gauge what was happening, huge mounds of mud, along with loose soil, came rolling down the hillock,” said Amulaya Das, a peasant.
The earth-cutting had begun since morning and by the noon there was a gaping hole in the hill.
All the victims — Bhanu Das, 65, Nanda Das, 48, Sagar Bagti, 28, Raghunath Rabidas, 30, and Soma Bagti, 25 — were working for the DRDA under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
Soma was five months’ pregnant and was not supposed to report for duty, as her name did not figure on the list of workers for today.
She was included following a last-minute change in the list after one of her relatives, who was also enlisted as a worker in the programme, pleaded for replacement.
Soma’s inconsolable mother kept repeating how she had been looking forward to the birth in the family by end-September.
The two injured, Suhit Malakar and Birbal Malakar, were taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Ghoonger. The expenses were borne by the district administration.
Cachar deputy commissioner Goutam Ganguli said he has ordered monetary relief of Rs 50,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased under the chief minister’s Jibanjyoti scheme.
Policemen were deployed in the village after angry residents threw stones at a few cars and trucks to protest the “mishap”.
A magisterial probe has been ordered into the circumstances leading to the mishap. Cachar DRDA director Naresh Ghosh, who is also an additional deputy commissioner, will conduct the inquiry and submit the report in a week’s time.

GUWAHATI, May 19: In a book release function held in Silchar on May 16, Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, who represents Silchar in the Lok Sabha, gave a clarion call to the people of Barak Valley to launch an agitation so as to force the completion of the Broad Gauge and East-West Corridor projects, which have been affected due to militancy in NC Hills district. But agitation against whom? Obviously against the government of the day. And who is leading the government — both at Dispur and New Delhi? It is the Congress. And who is Mr Santosh Mohan Dev? A Congress MP from Silchar who is a minister in the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, and who is thus a part of the government. Which means Mr Dev is calling upon the people of Barak Valley to agitate against none but himself and his party!
The Silchar MP is either trying to conceal his own incompetence or making a shrewd move to provoke his own people and divert their attention so that his accountability as their representative is not questioned. E-W corridor progressing well in Cachar: DC

SILCHAR, May 18: The progress of work on East-West Corridor in insurgency-hit North Cachar Hills might have been bogged down, but the pace of its development on the Cachar stretch is quite satisfactory. This has been revealed by Cachar Deputy Commissioner Gautam Ganguli, who made an on-the-spot visit to see the progress made so far in the construction of the four-lane 55-km part of Silchar-Detekcherra Super Highway. The Deputy Commissioner pointed out work on 25-km-long Silchar-Balacherra portion of the corridor is progressing well. The work of the remaining 30 km stretch from Balacherra to Detekcherra has been handed over to PWD (NH Division), which was earlier entrusted to the National Highway Authority of India.
This part of the corridor between Balacherra and Detekcherra will be double lane as the area falls within the proposed Borail biodiversity project. The official team was taken to different places of the corridor by the Executive Engineer, AK Chanda, of NH Division and showed the pace of work. Chanda said by 2009 the Cachar part of the super highway would be complete.

Tears flowed freely on Mother’s Day- Singer invites old-age home inmates to be part of special occasion

I have performed in many episodes of musical reality shows. But the last episode of the new show Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar will remain in my heart forever. For, it was something very special and is related to an issue very close to my heart. Those who have seen the show last Saturday will know what I mean.
For years now, I have been a regular visitor to the J.J. Dharamsala in Mumbai, which is an old-age home. Among the women in the dharamsala I see my mother who I lost a few years ago. I feel a deep sense of serenity when I spend time with the women of the dharamsala, which has almost become a second home for me. I find unadulterated love and affection among the women who have been forced to live there for different reasons.
Some of the stories the women told me are quite heart-rending. One old lady related to me how her son abandoned her in a park in Mumbai after bringing her to the city on the pretext of taking her out on an outing. I was shocked. How can a son do that to his own mother? But I prefer not to sit in judgement.
What pains me is the loneliness of these women who could be somebody’s mother or grandmother. In my own way, I have tried to give them company for some time and tried to ease the hurt in their hearts.
When I was told that the last episode of the reality show would be on the occasion of Mother’s Day, I invited some of the women of the home to be part of the audience. They readily agreed. It was a great feeling when I performed in front of the women who now think of me as their own son.
When I sang the hit song Mere naina sawan bhadon... from the film Mehbooba, some the women started crying aloud. Maybe the song struck a chord with them. There were very few people on the sets that day who did not have moist eyes.
After the recording was over, the editors debated for a long time whether they should retain and telecast the portion which showed the women crying. In the end they decided to keep it. I was told that it was one of the most emotional moments in the history of Indian reality show.
I revealed during the show that I was keen to set up an old-age home in my home state. It was heartening to see that all the contestants in the show and even many from the audience said they are ready to help me.
I feel that being a singer, I have some social obligations, which I am trying to fulfil. On Sunday, I performed at Guwahati at a function organised by a socio-cultural organisation Anandam. It is through Anandam that I am trying to do some social work, especially for the elderly who need our help. I am sure many of you would like to join me. 8 labourers killed in Lumding-Badarpur hill section

Suspected Black Widow militants gunned down eight construction workers of the Indian Railways at Phaidang under Mahur police station of North Cachar Hill district of Assam at around 2 pm on Sunday as a fresh bout of violence rocked the hill district since Saturday.
The police informed that a group of armed militants suspected to be from Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel Garlosa) or Black Widow opened indiscrimate fire at the construction workers killing eight of them on the spot.
The labourers were engaged by a contractor working in the multi-crore gauge conversion project of the Indian Railways in Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section under Northeast Frontier Railway. The railway project is already under severe threat from the marauding Black Widow militants.
The police and army launched a combing operation in the area following the massacre of the labourers.
A source in the Railways said that such killings by militants would not augur well for the gauge conversion project as well as railway services in Lumding-Badarpur hill section.
The Black Widow militants have posed serious threat to the project.
Incensed by fresh killings of its workers, the NFR might resort to cancellation of passenger train services in Lumding-Badarpur hill section in protest against continuing attacks by the militants and the failure of Assam government to provide adequate security to the contractors and workers engaged in the gauge-conversion project that is vital for expansion of the railway in the hill section of the north-east region.
Sunday's killing could be a retaliation by the DHD-J militants to the killing of 12 of its cadres by the army in the hill district on Saturday.
Three other persons were killed when Black Widow militants attacked a remote railway station in the hill district on Saturday night.
Barak student body threatens stir over Silchar road repair

SILCHAR, May 10 – The road condition of Silchar town will not improve before September. In the coming monsoon, the people of Silchar town have to make do with poor road conditions. This was informed by A K Chanda, Executive engineer, PWD (NH) division to the members All Barak Youth Student Association (ABYSA) on May 7. On the particular day, ABYSA gathered into the concerned department to know about the work progress. The objective behind it was to clarify why the roads of the Silchar town have not been improved yet and why the work is being delayed.
The ABYSA meanwhile has threatned to launch an indifinite strike if the road repair works of Silchar town are not taken up before the ensuing monsoon season.
Chanda, said that he had joined only two months before when only 5% work was done. But now, 40% work have been completed. The main obstacle behind the work is the master drainage project and the cable work of the BSNL, Drainage work is being carried out very slowly. Cable work of BSNL too is moving at a snail’s pace.

SILCHAR, May 10 – The road condition of Silchar town will not improve before September. In the coming monsoon, the people of Silchar town have to make do with poor road conditions. This was informed by A K Chanda, Executive engineer, PWD (NH) division to the members All Barak Youth Student Association (ABYSA) on May 7. On the particular day, ABYSA gathered into the concerned department to know about the work progress. The objective behind it was to clarify why the roads of the Silchar town have not been improved yet and why the work is being delayed.
The ABYSA meanwhile has threatned to launch an indifinite strike if the road repair works of Silchar town are not taken up before the ensuing monsoon season.
Chanda, said that he had joined only two months before when only 5% work was done. But now, 40% work have been completed. The main obstacle behind the work is the master drainage project and the cable work of the BSNL, Drainage work is being carried out very slowly. Cable work of BSNL too is moving at a snail’s pace.

Barak Valley is situated in the southern part of the Indian state of Assam. The main city of the valley is Silchar. The place is named after the Barak river. Barak valley mainly consists of three districts namely Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. Karimganj, the district headquarters of Karimgnaj district, is the second largest town in valley. It is considered as the cultural center of Barak valley.
The official language of Barak valley is Bangla. However, majority of people speak a dialect, which is known as Sylheti Bangla. Religious composition of the valley population is Hindu:50%,Muslim:46%,and others 4%. Hindus are majority in Cachar (60)% while Muslims are majority in Karimganj (53%) and Hailakandi(57%).

Silchar (Bengali: শিলচর Shilchôr, Assamese: শিলচৰ Xilsôr, Sylheti: শিলচর Hilsôr) is the headquarters of Cachar district in the state of Assam in India. It is the economic gateway to the state of Mizoram and part of Manipur. The town of Silchar has tremendous commercial importance. It consequently, witnesses the settlement of a sizeable population of traders from distant parts of India.
Being a peaceful place in the North-East earned it the bon mot of "Island of Peace" from India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The majority of natives in Silchar are Sylhethi, earlier a part of district under the erstwhile Sylhet district of undivided india. A sizeable fraction of the citizens also consist of people originally living here before the partition of Bengal. Silchar is situated by the banks of the Barak River in what is popularly known as Barak Valley.Rice is the staple cereal. Fish is also available. Shuţki (the local name for dried fish) tôrkari, shidal chutney, "chungar peetha" are some of the local delicacies.
Geography
Silchar is located at the southern part of Assam. Situated on the Barak River near the Bangladesh border, it is a trade and processing centre for tea, rice and other agricultural products. There is limited industry, principally papermaking and tea-box manufacturing. The city has an airport and lies on both a rail head and national highways connecting Guwahati, Assam; Agartala, Tripura; Imphal, Manipur and Aizawl in Mizoram state. It has an average elevation of 22 metres (72 feet).
Demographics
As of 2001 India census, Silchar had a population of 143,003. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Silchar has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 76%. In Silchar, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. Major religion followed is Hinduism.
Climate
At Silchar the wind generally blows from the northeast in the morning and from the southeast in the afternoon. Summer is hot, humid and interspersed with rains and thunderstorms. Winter generally starts towards the end of November and lasts till February. Towards the start of the Bengali month of Baishakh (mid-April) rain clouds start covering the skyline. Silchar is inundated almost every year due to excessive rain fall and flooding by the river Barak.
Education
Silchar has some of the best educational institutes in the whole of North East India. One of the 20 National Institutes of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering Colleges), NIT Silchar is one of the oldest engineering colleges in the North-Eastern region. REC Silchar as it was known previously is now an Institute of National Importance in India.
Silchar also has Silchar Medical College, a Polytechnic Institute, B.Ed colleges, two Law colleges and an Industrial Training Institute (ITI).
After several years of persistent efforts Silchar got its own university Assam University a central university, which imparts education in both the general as well as professional streams. The university, which came in to existence in 1994, has 9 schools and 29 departments under them. The university also has 51 affiliated colleges under it.
Some reputed schools in Silchar include Adhar Chand H.S. School, Holy Cross School, Silchar Collegiate School, South Point School,Oriental High School,Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Narsing School, Govt. Boys School, Govt. Girls school and a couple of Kendriya Vidyalayas amongst others. Among the colleges the best known ones are Guru Charan College, Ramanuj College, Cachar College, Radhamadhav College etc. Guru Charan College is one of the most respected and reputed colleges in the whole of Assam. On the other hand, Ramanuj College is known to be the most successful institution for +2 level studies, now-a-days, in the entire Barak valley. The colleges are credited with producing some of the best intellectuals of the region.
Recent years have seen Silchar emerge as a potential educational place where denizens from the trouble-torn North-Eastern region come to the town for their children's education. Silchar is connected by road, rail and air to the rest of the country.
Silchar is connected through meter gauge rail network with Lumding and this is currently being updated to broad gauge lines. The railways station is located at Tarapur, Silchar. There are regular inter state bus services connecting Silchar with Guwahati, Shillong, Aizawl, Agartala and other places. The airport is located at Kumbhirgram, about 22 km from Silchar and there are regular flights connecting Silchar with Kolkata, Guwahati and Agartala.

"The management of the affairs of the district was entrusted after annexation, to Lieutenant Fisher, an officer of approved ability and great local experience. for some months Cachar continued to be administered from Cherrapunji, the head quarters of the Agent to the Governor General, but in consideration of practical difficulties early in 1833 Fisher had his head quarters at Dudputli which however were soon shifted to Silchar for the sake of convenience."
In the 1850s, British tea planters re-discovered the game polo in Manipur on the Burmese border with India. The first polo club in the world was formed at Silchar. The first competitive modern form of Polo was also played out in Silchar and the plaque for this feat still stand at the back side of the District Library, Silchar. Other clubs followed and, today, the oldest in the world is the Calcutta Club, founded in 1862.
Railway Link
The Assam Bengal Railway brought Silchar into the Indian railway map in 1899. The railway line from Lumding to Silchar is hailed as one of the most exciting pristine railway tracks of India. Built by the British during the colonial rule, the Meter Gauge line stands testimony to the grandiose of what was once a highly popular city in the North-East.
Language Martyrs
Silchar saw one of the uprising in favour of the Bengali language. When the Assam Government, under Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, passed a circular to make Assamese mandatory, Bengalis of Barak Valley protested. On 19th March, 1961, Assam Police opened fire on unarmed protesters at Silchar Railway Station in which 11 agitators died. After the popular revolt, Assam Government had to withdraw the circular and Bengali was ultimately given official status in the three districts of Barak Valley.

Karimganj District is an administrative district in the state of Assam in India. The district headquarters are located at Karimganj.
Geography
The district occupies an area of 1809 km². It is bounded on the northeast by Cachar District, on the east by Hailakandi District, on the south by Mizoram state, on the southwest by Tripura state, and on the west and northwest by Bangladesh. Karimganj Town The administrative headquarter and main town of the district also bears the same name, that is, Karimganj. Location Karimganj town is located on the northern fringe of the district adjoining Bangladesh, by the river Kushiara. Its distance from Guwahati - the state capital of Assam - is approximately 330 km by road and about 350 km by rail. Distance of other important places are : Silchar - 55 km, Shillong - 220 km, Agartala - 250 km. Communication Karimganj town has communication links with both rail and road with the rest of India. Karimganj town is a railway junction and meter gauge lines connecting Tripura with Assam pass through this station. The most popular mode of passenger transport, however, is by road. A good number of buses - mostly night services - ply between Karimganj and Guwahati daily. Direct long distance bus services are also available to Shillong, Agartala, Aizawl and so on. Communication with Silchar, Badarpur, Patherkandi and other nearby places is also mainly dependent on road transport, with services by all sorts of light and heavy vehicles available a frequent intervals. The nearest airport is Kumbhirgram (85 km) near Silchar - the headquarter of the adjacent district of Cachar. Karimganj town is also an important river port and has seasonal cargo and freight transport link with Kolkata through river ways via Bangladesh. Geography Flanked on two sides by the rivers Kushiyara and Longai, Karimganj town is located just on the Bangladesh border with the river Kushiara flowing in between. One prominent feature of the place is a long and winding canal called Noti Khal meandering across the town. Earlier, it used to be a connecting river way between Kushiara and Longai facilitating river communication and also balancing of water-levels between the two rivers. Now, however, this canal has been blocked at several places through embankments and land-fills to pave way for road transport and construction works.
History
In 1878, the British administration designated Karimganj town as the headquarters of the newly created sub-division of Karimganj. Before Partition of India in 1947, Karimganj District was a sub-division of greater Sylhet DistrictThe estate of the earstwhile zamindars of Hasanpur,in Badarpur is also situated in Karimganj. After partition, most of Sylhet District joined East Pakistan, which eventually became the independent nation of Bangladesh in 1971.
Since 1947 Karimganj town continued to be the headquarter of a truncated Karimganj sub-division, now attached to the Cachar district of Assam.
In 1983 this town was re-designated as the District headquarter of the newly upgraded Karimganj district.
Trade and Commerce
Karimganj town is an important centre of trade and commerce in the North East India. Its river port, with elaborate infra-structures like cargo-terminal, jetty, warehouses etc., is capable of handling large volumes of cargoes carried by steamers plying through river ways via Bangladesh. Karimganj is also a borders trade centre and import-export business worth crores of rupees is carried out through the custom trade point at Kalibari Ghat in the town.
Demography
The district has a population of 1,003,678 (as of 2001). The district's litaracy rate is 55.78%. Muslims form a slight majority in the district, at 52% of the population, with Hindus comprising 47% according to the 2001 Indian census.
Karimganj is one of several districts in Assam where Bengali is spoken by the majority of the population, as also in some other districts such as Cachar, Barpeta, Halaikandi, Dhubri and Goalpara.

The district has 5 tehsils or development circles (Karimganj, Badarpur, Nilambazar, Patherkandi and Ramkrishna Nagar), two urban areas (Karimganj and Badarpur) 3 towns (Karimganj, Badarpur, and Badarpur Railway Town), 7 community development blocks (North Karimganj, South Karimganj, Badarpur, Patherkandi, Ramkrishna Nagar, Dullavcherra and Lowairpoa), 5 police stations (Karimganj, Badarpur, Ramkrishna Nagar, Patharkandi, Ratabari), 96 gram panchayats, and seven anchalik panchayats.

Barak River
The Barak River is the major river of northeastern India and part of the Surma-Meghna River System. It rises in the Manipur hills and enters the plains near Lakhipur. Downstream of Silchar town and before entering Bangladesh the Barak bifurcates into the Surma River and the Kushiyara River. The principal tributaries of the Barak in India are the Jirl, the Dhaleshwari, the Singla, the Longai, the Sonai and the Katakhal.
Course
From its source in the Manipur Hills near Mao Songsang, the river is known as the Barak River. It flows west through Manipur State, then southwest leaving Manipur. The principal tributaries of the Barak in India are the Jirl, the Dhaleshwari, the Singla, the Longai, the Sonai and the Katakhal.
In Mizoram State it flows southwest then veers abruptly north when joined by a north flowing stream and flows into Assam State where it turns westward again near Lakipur and flows west past the town of Silchar where it enters Bangladesh.
In the upper part, the river receives a lot of little hill streams, namely, Gumti, Howrah, Kagni, Senai Buri, Hari Mangal, Kakrai, Kurulia, Balujhuri, Shonaichhari and Durduria.

Sylheti language
Sylheti (native name সিলটী Silôţi; Bengali name সিলেটী Sileţi) is the language of Sylhet, the north-eastern region of Bangladesh, and also spoken in parts of the North-East Indian states of Assam (the Barak valley) and Tripura (the North Tripura district). It is also spoken by a significant population in the other north-eastern states of India and amongst the large expatriate communities in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and the Middle East.
Sylheti is often either considered a dialect of Bengali (Bangla) or an Assamese language due to many similarities between the languages, and also often considered a separate language due to significant differences between them all. Given that Sylhet was part of the ancient kingdom of Kamarupa,[1] the language has many common features with Assamese, including the existence of a larger set of fricatives than other East Indic languages. According to Grierson,[2] "The inflections also differ from those of regular Bengali, and in one or two instances assimilate to those of Assamese". Indeed it was formerly written in its own script, Sylheti Nagari, similar in style to Kaithi but with differences, though nowadays it is almost invariably written in Bengali script.
Sylheti is distinguished by a wide range of fricative sounds (which correspond to aspirated stops in closely-related languages such as Bengali), the lack of breathy voiced stops seen in many other Indic languages, word-final stress, and a relatively large set of loanwords from Arabic, Hindi and Persian. Sylheti is spoken by about 10 percent of Bangladeshis, but has affected the course of standard Bengali in the rest of the state.
