North East India


North East India, also termed as ‘paradise unexplored’ is one of the many places in India which is yet to be discovered by tourists. North East India comprises of seven states also referred to as the ‘seven sisters’. The ‘seven sisters’ comprises of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.

                These seven states offer a wide variety of tourist attractions. Assam is the largest of them all and it has a large number of pilgrimage sites. Most notable of them all is the Kamakhya temple situated at Guwahati. Assam is also known for the large number of cultural monuments which were built during the Ahom rule. The world renowned Kaziranga National Park known for its unique one-horned rhino is visited by tourists from around the world. Majuli, the largest river island in the world and the centre of the Sattriya culture is also a vital tourist destination.

               Meghalaya, also known as the abode of the clouds with its capital at Shillong, is another popular tourist destination. With its numerous caves and waterfalls including the famous Elephant falls and the Nohkilikhai falls its scenic beauty could be unmatched. Other popular tourist spots are Wads Lake at Shillong, Cherrapunji and Sohra, the wettest places on earth and the Barapani Lake situated 15 kms away from Shillong.

Tripura and its capital Agartala also boasts of numerous places of tourist attractions. The most important of them is the Ujjayanta Palace built by the Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya and is situated in the heart of Agartala. Other vital tourist destinations include the Tripura State Museum, the Tribal Museum, the Tripurasundari temple, the Bhavaneswari temple and the Dumboor Lake.  
                 Nagaland, with its capital Kohima provides a large variety of tourist attractions which includes Dimapur, the largest town, Kiphire with the Saramati peak and the Fakim wildlife Sanctuary, Kohima, with the Kohima Cathedral, the largest in Asia and the scenic World War 2 cemetery. The Hornbill festival showcases the cultures of the 16 tribes that constitute the state.
                    Mizoram, also called as the land of the Blue Mountains is one of the most beautiful places in North East India. The tourist hotspots include Tamdil with its Tam Lake, Aizawl, the Vantawng falls, Phawngpui for adventure tourists and Lunglei, one of the many hill stations in the state.
                    Manipur also offers a wide range of tourist importance. The most vital among them are the Loktak Lake, Moirang which is the center of the Meitei folk culture, Kaina and the Red Hills. Imphal, the states capital also boasts of a large number of tourist hotspots. 
                      Arunachal Pradesh is situated at the northernmost part of North Eastern India and known for the Tawang Monastery situated at Tawang. The capital is Itanagar which has a wide variety of tourist attractions. Other places of tourist significance are Along – Mechukha, Bomdila and the Sela Pass. Arunachal is also known for its orchids.
                          To visit the seven sister states, one has to reach Guwahati which is well connected to the rest of India by road, rail and air. Although, North East India can be visited any time of the year, the most suitable period is from October-April.

Assam University was formed in 1994 by Prof. M. S. Swaminathan and Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee. The Government of Assam first planed to make their university in 1989 and then it was successfully built and started to run from 1994. There are 51 Undergraduate Colleges and 29 Departments in nine Schools. This School is situated in at Durgakona with a 600 acres area and 20 km away from Slichar. This nine schools which teach the following subjects: Technology and Management, Languages, Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Information Sciences, Environment Sciences, Physical Sciences.

In Languages this university teaches English, Foreign Languages, Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Sanskrit, Manipuri and Linguistics. Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics are the main subjects in Physical Science. Law, Political Science, History, Economics and Social Work are taught in Social Science lecture. The Agriculture field offers you two main courses namely B.Sc. and M.sc.

The University has a great hostel facility which consists of boys and girls hostel separately. Hostels are locates near to the Irongrama and Dwrabond. Busses facility is provided for students and staff which droves them from campus to Slichar. Assam University has the biggest Library in Assam. It consists of 52,557 books which are of 13 foreign journals and 186 Indian journals. It also has 16 news paper and 12 magazines. Assam University has its own library for each department and is accessible to students every time. In year 1998-1999 Assam University was selected by U.G.C for networking and automation under INFLIBNET Programmers. The INFLIBNET had already made 250000 books for the main central library.
