10-year delay in bypass nod costs Rs 69 crore

.
Dec. 17: The Centre has finally given its nod for the Silchar bypass project, 10 years after it was proposed, pushing up the construction cost by Rs 69 crore but raising hopes of a smooth in-town traffic flow.

An official of the National Highways Authority of India said the proposed 20.12km two-lane bypass, stretching from this town’s western end to the eastern suburbs, will link National Highways 53 and 54.

The project would have cost Rs 100 crore if work had begun soon after the bypass was proposed in 1998.

In the 10 years that the Centre’s ministry of transport and national highways took to give its approval, prices have escalated, causing the current budget to hover around Rs 169 crore.
If constructed within two years, vehicles that now take National Highway 54 to reach Cachar from Mizoram will be shifted to highway number 44, which links the land-locked south Assam with the rest of the country through Meghalaya.

Similarly, vehicles to and from Manipur may be diverted through the bypass to National Highway 53.

The official said work would begin soon on the project that includes construction of at least five bridges over the Barak at Sonabarighat and over Boaljur and Sonai streams.

The biggest bridge will be the one at Sonabarighat. At 162 feet, it will be high enough for ships to pass under it.

The state PWD will build the bridges while the National Highways Authority of India will look after the bypass construction. source: the telegraph india
