Karimganj (Assam), Dec 25 A river terminal was inaugurated at Badarpur ghat in Assam&aposs Karimganj district to facilitate the resumption of Haldia to Silchar waterways service via Bangladesh.Inland Water Transport Corporation Secretary V N Sharma, inaugurating the terminal last night, said that the revival of this water route would go a long way in the all round development of the region.
&apos&aposThe prices of essential commodities will come due to low cost of fuel consumption and will also help in tackling the flood problem of the area&apos&apos, he said.
The waterway services would resume soon after the passing the necessary bill in this connection in Parliament and would initially be for a period of six months though the possibility of making it a year-round service was under active consideration, he said.
The proposal of dredging the rivers Meghna and Padma in Bangladesh would also taken up soon and its expenses borne by the Indian government, Sharma added. PTI
