All major parties hopeful of victory

GUWAHATI, April 16: All the three major political parties of Asom that have candidates in the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls held today are hopeful of winning.

Talking to The Sentinel after the polls, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita said: “We will retain all the three seats. We had the fear of the AUDF eroding traditional Congress votes in the Silchar seat, but the voters rejected the AUDF. We will get good response from the voters on April 23 also. We have nine seats with us, and the number this year can’t be less than that. Our win is certain.”

AUDF working president HRA Choudhury said: “We have contested two seats — Silchar and Karimganj — and we are sure that our performance in both the seats will be good. In Silchar seat, Santosh Mohan Dev undertook malpractices like rigging, intimidation to voters and the like. We have informed the authorities concerned of such incidents.”

BJP spokesman Pradip Thakur said: “The Silchar and Diphu seats will be ours. There was massive rigging in Karimganj. In many polling stations, our polling agents were expelled. We have brought the matter to the notice of the Election Commission.” THE SENTINEL
