All the political parties have started hectic political campaign in both rural and urban areas of Cachar district. The three major candidates are trying to woo the voters mainly through door to door campaign. AUDF supremo Badaruddin Ajmal has started campaign in the villages of Cachar. He is confident that the people will definitely elect him as he is assuring of industrial revolution in Barak Valley if he is elected to Parliament. Ajmal is confident that the defeat of Congress heavyweight Santosh Mohan Dev is certain in this election. He, however strongly said that his party may join the centre in any front except the BJP led NDA. A section of Congress and BJP supporters in Silchar have also raised questions about his closeness to Assam Minister Gautam Roy. But Ajmal kept mum when media persons asked him to comment on this. The Cachar district has 3, 97, 000 Muslim voters and Ajmal is trying to reap maximum benefit but of it. Cachar Muslims are known to be Congress supporters and this time Dev definitely be facing threat due to the rise of the AUDF. At present AUDF has only one Assembly seat (Katigorah) in Cachar district. One allegation has also been levelled against AUDF that they are clearing the way for the BJP.

On the other hand, BJP candidate Kabindra Purkayastha is also facing threat from Congress though his main issues of campaign are the inefficiency of Congress regarding the development of the district and corruption and appeasement of minorities. He is also playing the Hindutva card. At present the BJP has two Assembly seats (Dhalai and Borkhola) in the district. There are some dissidents also in the party but Purkayastha has ruled out any dissidence and said that BJP will definitely win the seat as all the members are working unitedly. The tea garden voters of the district are 1, 95, 000 and BJP is hopeful of getting majority of them in their favour. BJP’s another major vote bank is in Silchar town where total voters are 1, 95, 000. CPI (M)’s Dipak Bhattacharjee also has some intellectual and labour class voters in the town and he will also share a major chunk of votes.

Congress heavyweight Santosh Mohan Dev is facing stiff contest in the seat due to the entry of AUDF for the first time in Lok Sabha. His major poll plank is the development of Cachar district in every sphere. In the last election he won the seat defeating BJP’s Purkayastha. Dev said that BJP and AUDF has united against him but they will be defeated by the people.

On the other hand, the people of Silchar are reluctant to vote. The women folk are also not at all happy with the present government for its failure to contain price rice and they may vote against Congress.

The Silchar constituency has 9, 78, 460 voters. Of them 5, 09, 285 are male and 4, 59, 396 are female. 6414 are D-Voters in the district and of them 2740 are male and 3676 are female.
