202 hypersensitive polling stations identified in Karimganj

NILAMBAZAR, April 2 – In a bid to combat any sort of security threat during the forthcoming polls, the Karimganj district administration which is holding elections to No. 1 Karimganj-HPC has divided the polling stations into three categories, like hypersensitive, sensitive and comparatively safe as far as security is concerned.

A high-level meeting of senior administrative and security officials, held recently identified 354 polling stations as sensitive and 202 polling stations as hypersensitive in the district.

According to official sources, out of the 202 hypersensitive polling stations, Ratabari LAC alone recorded 43. Coming next, Patarkandi LAC with 31, and North-Karimganj LAC with 37, while South-Karimganj LAC has 45 and Badarpur has 46 respectively.

South-Karimganj LAC has witnessed the maximum sensitive polling stations with 68, next to South-Karimganj, Ratabari LAC and Patharkandi LAC have the maximum number of polling stations 25 and 57 respectively. Meanwhile, North-Karimganj and Badarpur LAC’s have recorded the lowest number of 34 sensitive polling stations.

Altogether, 6,77,119 voters in Karimganj district will exercise their voting rights in the ensuing Lok Sabha election in 761 polling-stations, out of which 3,53,719 are male voters and 3,18,906 are female voters in the five legislative assemblies of the district.

As per official records, a total of 3,127 voters are doubtful in the district out of which 845 are male and 2,282 voters are female in Karimganj. They will be debarred from excusing their voting rights till the decision of citizenship is announced by the tribunal. ASSAM TRIBUNE

Nepal Das rejoins Cong

HAILAKANDI, April 2 – Former Member of Parliament from Karimganj (Reserve) constituency, Nepal Chandra Das has rejoined in the Congress party on Sunday, at a function here. Das left the Congress party before the last Lok Sabha when he was denied party ticket for contesting polls the Karimganj constituency. Das was also elected MLA twice from Algapur constituency of Hailakandi and was also Minister in Assam for a short while. He was twice elected to the Parliament.

The function at Congress Bhawan was attended by the Excise and Border Areas Development Minister Gautam Roy, Congress candidate of Karimganj constituency, Lalit Mohan Suklavaidya, chairman of Hailakandi Municipal Board, Ranjit Kumar Saha, president of Hailakandi District Congress Committee, Ashoke Dutta Gupta among others.

In his address, Das said that the decision of rejoining the Congress party was taken by him to strengthen the party before Lok Sabha election. He said that every party worker should work unitedly and sincerely in the greater interest of the party. He said that he earlier had some allegations against the leadership of the party in Hailakandi and that is why he left the party; but now he has no allegation and wants to work for the party. Minister Gautam Roy, in his address, expressed satisfaction for the return of the former Parliamentarian into the Congress fold.
