Silchar Collegiate School celebrates 36th anniversary

SILCHAR, April 26: Silchar Collegiate School celebrated its 36th Annual function in a befitting manner with a two-day long colourful programmes. Samar Kanti Roy Chowdhury, Principal of the school, in his inaugural speech on Friday said, Collegiate School began its sojourn on April 24, 1974. For the last 36 years, the institution had travelled a lot, but the aim was yet to be achieved.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, recalled his school days as well as those days in Narsingh School where he first joined as a teacher. Bhattacharjee, who spoke in Bengali, explained that it might sound improper for many that he was not speaking in English in a function of an English medium school. But students should realize the importance and respect their mother tongue deserves, he added. Swami Satsadanandaji Maharaj of Silchar Ramkrishna Mission Sevasram, in his brief speech, stressed on building up of moral character of the budding students. He said spiritual education should be incorporated in the syllabus.

Partha Sarathi Chanda, Principal of GC College said, parents are the primary teacher to every child and parents should remember that the primary aim of education was not to get a lucrative job, but to become a good human being. Others who spoke in the inaugural function, presided over by Sujan Dutta, chairman of the governing body included DSA president Badal Dey, Partha Sarathi Chakraborty, secretary of Society of Guardians, TK Dutta Chowdhury and Subrata Paul. School magazine ‘Vanguard’ was unveiled by Swami Satsadanandaji Maharaj.

On Saturday, the function had an element of surprise as Deputy Commissioner donned the mantle of quiz master. Eminent journalist and former editor of The Sentinel DN Bezboruah’s presence added additional pleasant surprise in the function. THE SENTINEL
