Sonia Gandhi visit to clash with 12-hr bandh in Silchar

Assam Silchar Lok Sabha Election
Silchar, April 7:
A students’ outfit in Cachar district has scheduled a 12-hour bandh from 5am on Sunday, just four days before the Lok Sabha polls, thus adding a note of unease in the electoral scenario.

The bandh called by the All Cachar-Karimganj Students’ Association has come as a bolt from the blue sky to the Congress leaders as it will coincide with the programme of party president Sonia Gandhi. Sonia is slated to arrive here for a poll congregation at this second biggest town in Assam on the same day on April 12.

A senior Congress leader today admitted that the decision by the student body to call the bandh, along with a “janata curfew”, has unnerved the party’s top brass. They are bound to hamper efforts by Congressmen to mobilise people for Sonia’s rally.

Union minister Sontosh Mohan Dev is holding fort in Silchar Lok Sabha seat as his party’s candidate on a multi-pronged contest on April 16. His main rivals are BJP leader and former Union minister Kabindra Purakayastha and AUDF president Badruddin Ajmal.

The bandh was called to press home the demand to expedite the pace of work relating to the conversion of the 182-km-long metre gauge Badarpur-Lumding railway track into a broad-gauge line. The student body also wants early completion of the Assam portion of the work regarding an east-west expressway from this town.

An official source today said the district administration and police are keeping a close watch on the proposed rally of Sonia Gandhi here on April 12 in a bid to maintain peace.

The police strength in the district has now been bolstered with the induction of 12 more companies of paramilitary formations for election duty from outside for keeping peace. THE TELEGRAPH
