Trouble spots in Cachar rise to 91, Assam Lok Sabha Election

SILCHAR, April 10: Prior to the holding of election on April 16, Silchar police had identified at least 91 places as trouble spots in this constituency spread over seven Assembly segments. Police has been maintaining close vigil in these 91 spots sensing trouble during the Lok Sabha polls. On April 16, a posse of CRPF would patrol in these spots to ensure peaceful polling, sources said.

Interestingly, out of these 91 trouble spots, maximum number of 25 fall under the Silchar police station. These include–Topkhana, Singari, Janakpur, Berenga, Madhurbond, Tarapur, Ramnagar, Srikona, Vajantipur, Kuarpar, Barjalenga, Doodhpatil, Salchapra, Silcorie, Gangapur, Chirukandi, Kashipur, Badripar and Durgapur–all in the outskirts of the main town.

Areas in the heart of Silchar – Link Road, Meherpur, GC College Road, Ambicapatty, Public School Road– were also bracketed within the trouble spot zone. Also, in minority dominated Sonai Assembly constituency at least nine areas have been identified as trouble spots in Dholai. Sources indicated that to ensure peaceful polling, the entire constituency had been divided into eight zones, and police officers would be equipped with VHF set and armed forces.

These eight zones had again been divided into 85 sectors and would be under the supervision of sub-inspectors. Meanwhile, a source informed that as per the requirements placed by Cachar police, additional 15 companies of para-military forces had already arrived at Silchar taking the total number to 16 companies.
