Hailakandi Election
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI, May 6 – Alleging large-scale rigging and booth capturing in the Hailakandi district, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh on Tuesday demanded postponing of counting in the Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency and total repoll in the Hailakandi district. The election here was held on April 16 in the first phase of the parliamentary polls.
The party will approach the Chief Election Commissioner today and submit a written complaint demanding repoll.
Addressing media persons here, the party lambasted the Tarun Gogoi government for failing to conduct the elections in a free and fair atmosphere in Hailakandi district and alleged that the polls were manipulated with the connivance of the DC, SP, DFO who acted as the protocol officer and the local Congress leaders.
Describing the election in Hailakandi as a farce and shame to democracy, the BJP candidate for the Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency Sudhangshu Das who was present at the press conference alleged that there was casting of votes in the EVMs on pre-election night and in one particular instance four CISF personnel were placed under suspension for such an unfair act.
“Detection of involvement of CISF personnel in rigging is just one instance. Many such cases occurred in Hailakandi district which were not detected by the administration,” said Das mentioning that anticipating such unfair practices the BJP had submitted memorandums to the authorities concerned well ahead, but no steps were taken to ensure that the election was fair.
“The government machinery was plainly used in favour of the ruling party on the day of the election,” alleged Das.
Referring to the report of the central observer A Tukaram wherein he had mentioned that the ruling party and the district administration of Hailakandi were involved in large-scale rigging, Das demanded transfer of the DC, SP, DFO prior to a repoll and counting.
It may be mentioned here that the BJP met the chief electoral officer (CEO) on Monday and submitted a written complaint. The party said that its complaints which were submitted to the authorities concerned before, after and on the day of the election were not forwarded to the higher authorities for necessary action.
