SILCHAR, May 9: Cop-turned-dacoit Tamizuddin Laskar had close links with NSCN (I-M) and other militant outfits operating mainly in the NC Hills areas, confessed Tamiz, who was apprehended by Silchar Police from a secret hideout at Ladrymbai this week after he was sacked by Assam Police for allegedly looting the Malkhana of Karimganj Court in 1994.
Soon after his release on bail, Tamiz went to Dimapur and took shelter in the NSCN (I-M) camp. The Naga militants used him as linkman for their trip to Chittagong hill track of Bangladesh where almost all the militant groups of the Northeast had their camps. Tamiz, who joined the Assam Police in 1985 and showed his calibre as an able jawan reportedly made some enemies in his own department.
Tamiz reportedly claimed that he was made a scapegoat by a group of policemen who were angry with him as he being the PSO of the then SP Pallab Bhattacharjee unearthed some rackets of smugglers which had clandestine links with some of his colleagues. Tamiz was sent back by NSCN (I-M) in 2001 to Cachar with a purpose of building up a militant group and he accordingly formed an outfit called Barak Liberation Front which had some hard core criminals from Lumding, Hojai and Lanka.
But the group could not survive as they engaged themselves into inner fighting over the booty they earned. Later, from 2005 onwards, Tamiz concentrated on engaging petty criminals to form a gang of dacoits.
The most startling information that Tamiz shared with the Silchar Police till now was his intimacy with the South Karimganj MLA Siddique Ahmed who had reportedly paid Tamiz a hefty amount to eliminate his political mentor as well as former State Minister Muktadir Chowdhury whom he had defeated in the last two assembly elections.
Ahmed had directly denied the allegation claiming that he never met Tamiz and a political conspiracy was being hatched up by his rivals hinting the hands of Minister Gautom Roy behind the picture. Ahmed, who won the election as an Independent candidate later became an associate Congress MLA, and he used to maintain a cordial relation with Roy but that started to sour as the latter reportedly patronized some other Muslim youths challenging the position of Siddique.
Meanwhile, Muktadir Chowdhury said he was cautioned by Silchar Police last month about the possible attack on him. Cachar Additional SP PR Kar who nabbed Tamiz, admitted that they figured the number of Ahmed in the call register of Tamiz’s cell phone as the Police had asked the mobile company to supply the entire call chart of Tamiz’s mobile phone. THE SENTINEL
