SILCHAR, May 1: Tarapur police outpost OC Shyambabu Sinha has been replaced by Nabajit Das Bagdi as he allegedly failed to control the mob that attacked the residence of district Congress general secretary Partha Ranjan Chakraborty as well as the chairman of Silchar Development Authority on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, Chakraborty, who along with his younger brother Sujay are recuperating in a private cabin at Silchar Medical College and Hospital had reportedly told the police that the mob violence at his residence was not an instant reaction of the slum dwellers of Malini beel, adjacent to his Ramakrishna Lane residence in Tarapur area of the town. Rather it was a meticulously planned ploy, hatched by a group who had a greedy eye on the land.
A source in the police also hinted that they were investigating the entire episode from this angle too, as the slum dwellers virtually brought out a rally in Malini beel holding neatly written placards condemning atrocities by Chakraborty within one and a half hour after the attack.
A police source said they wondered how these slum dwellers could write placards so quickly? A source indicated that these placards were actually written the previous day in the nearby Ashram Road residence of a Hindi speaking lawyer who was the member of an opposition political party. Partha Ranjan had also indicated in the same line in his version to the police.
The entire episode got a dramatic twist as a mysteriously call apparently from Guwahati to a local businessman forced the investigation to take a different angle.
Subhas Mitra of Silchar Merchants’ Association Co-ordination Commiittee received a call in his phone from a mobile (No 9957726852) and the caller identifying himself as Matteswar Rao asked him to arrange relief from his association to the people of Malini beel. When Mitra refused to act, he was threatened with dire consequences.
A police source admitted that Mitra had informed them about the incident.
The source said they had tracked down the caller from the number of his cell phone and it was found that Rao was from Dhirenpara area of Guwahati. A police source hinted that Rao might be associated with some saffron parties.
Meanwhile, State’s Urban Development Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala had asked the district police to immediately arrest the accused, named in the FIR. Goala told The Sentinel that out of 11 accused named in the FIR, filed by Chakraborty’s wife Bithika, six had already been arrested and remaining five would very soon be nabbed.
Goala and former Minister Misbahul Islam Laskar yesterday met the police and administration official in a review meeting and asked them to tighten the security in some places of the town like Malini beel, Tapoban nagar and other nearby areas where a group of slum dwellers harassed common people regularly.
Malini beel, a vast slum area, however look deserted now, haunted by terror of police atrocity. Almost all the male members of the area have flown away from Malini beel.
A group of women told the journalists that they had been constantly harassed by police. Meanwhile, residents of greater Tarapur area today convened a press meet to air their resentment over the role of police administration. They said, they were feeling utter lack of security as a leader of the ruling party was openly beaten by a mob.
‘What security do common people lick as have? They raised the question. They demanded removal of the OC of Silchar Sadar Thana. Addressing the press meet, Bithika Chakraborty, wife of Partha Ranjan, said last week also some thieves intruded in to their house. The pressmeet was addressed by former ward commissioner Gopal Das, Dr Rajib Kar, retired police officer AM Sinha and Chameli Kar. THE SENTINEL
