Slum dwellers accuse Congress leader Partha Ranjan of torture

SILCHAR, May 2: The incident of dare devil mob violence on the residence of district Congress general secretary Partha Ranjan Chakraborty is getting complicated day by day. A group of residents of Malin Beel, a slum area, who were accused of attacking the house of Partha Ranjan on Tuesday, today informed BC Nath, the magistrate who had been appointed by the district administration to probe the incident, that they were being regularly harassed by the Congress leader.

Chakraborty, who was also the chairman of the Silchar Development Authority was accused of collecting Rs 100 from each and every family of the slum, adjacent to his Ramkrishna lane residence in Tarapur area. They further alleged that Partha Ranjan used to threat them to vacate the land as he had allegedly sold a good number of plot to the builders.

Meanwhile, the entire episode got a dramatic turn when Congress MLA from Algapur of Hailakandi district Rahul Roy suddenly announced that he would not tolerate any excess by Silchar police on the poor slum dwellers of Malin Beel. Rahul, son of Excise Minister Gautom Roy, even threatened to launch an agitation to protect the slum dwellers belonging to SC community.
The inner fighting between the Congress leaders of the neighbouring districts has become evident from the stance taken by Rahul Roy. On the other hand, the BJP MLA from Barkhola of Cachar district Dr Rumi Nath condemned the ‘police atrocities’ on the women of Malin Beel. Demanding allotment of patta to the landless slum dwellers who have been residing in the area for a long time, Nath said she would raise the matter in the Assembly.

Meanwhile, Partha Ranjan and his brother Sujay who had also sustained serious injury in the mob violence were released from Silchar Medical College and Hospital yesterday. THE SENTINEL
