Gautam Roy playing Hindu card?

SILCHAR, Aug 5: Asom Excise Minister Gautam Roy has allegedly started to play his “Hindu card” for the 2011 Assembly elections.

In a recent meeting that was attended by firebrand VHP leader Pravin Togadia at Hailakandi, Roy sent his trusted lieutenant Gautam Gupta to felicitate the VHP leader’s presence at the meet. A few years back, Roy stirred up a controversy by attending a Ram puja that was organized by the VHP in Kaiya Tea Garden, and the issue was even stretched up to the State Congress Disciplinary Committee headed by former Union Minister Sontosh Mohan Dev. In spite of having faith in the party’s secular image, Roy is an exceptional Congress leader who projects himself as an ardent Hindu, and this straight stance on his part has cornered the BJP in Hailakandi, a subdivision where Muslims are the majority.

Recently Siddique Ahmed, associated Congress MLA from South Karimganj, openly challenged the leadership of his one-time mentor Gautam Roy. Ahmed, a controversial politician, even branded Roy as an anti-Muslim leader. This virtually put Roy in back foot.

Sources said Roy has already begun warm-up for the 2011 Assembly elections, and he knows well that only the Hindus can ensure his victory as they did in the past. THE SENTINEL
