SILCHAR, Aug 11: Professor Subir Kar, author of a number of books on the Language Movement of 1961, expressed his happiness as the government finally accorded the language martyrs their due respect.
Much activity and happiness was seen on the faces of the people here after the Union Home Ministry’s approval for change of nomenclature of the Silchar Railway Station to Bhasha Shahid Station.
Aamra Bangali leader Sadhan Purkayastha admitted that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi played an exceptional role by forwarding the proposal placed before him by the Sammilito Samskritik Mancha and ACKHSA to the Centre.
All Barak Youth Students’ Association (ABYSA) earlier, in a bid to change the nomenclature of the railway station, collected 1.31 lakh signatures of people in favour of the demand.
ABYSA also staged a dharna in Jantar Mantar in New Delhi demanding immediate completion of the board-gauge and change of nomenclature of the railway station.
On the other hand, a seven-member delegation of the mancha met State Minister of Rail in-charge of the Northeast Ibrahim Ahmed for the purpose.
Eleven martyrs had sacrificed their lives on May 19, 1961 at the Silchar Railway Station for the sake of their mother language. After that, 48 years had passed but the government refused to honour them with martyrdom.
The people of Barak Valley have been nurturing a wound in their hearts for government’s insincerity towards the language martyrs.
At last, almost after half a century, the 11 martyrs were accorded with martyrdom from the State after Mamate Banerjee took charge as the Railway Minister.
The approval of the change in nomenclature by the Home Ministry reached the Rail Board yesterday and OSD to the Railway Ministry Rattan Mukherjee reportedly said that Banerjee would make the announcement in the third week of this month. Souces said the demand for change of nomenclature of the railway station, as a token to respect to the martyrs, was first raised on April 17, 2005, at a meeting organized by the Bhasha Shahid Station Shahid Smaran Smriti. Later, 52 organizations raised voice for change in nomenclature.
Dhankumari Sutradhar and Shantikona Niyogi, wives of language martyrs Birendra Sutradhar and Kanai Lal Niyogi respectively, told The Sentinel that it was a dream come true for them as they never thought that the sacrifice made by their husbands would ultimately get recognition. THE SENTINEL
