Susmita Dev front runner for SMB chief post

SILCHAR, Aug 5: The chances of Susmita Dev becoming the Silchar Municipality Board’s next chairperson seems to be very bright. Sources in the Congress said it is likely that district Congress president Karnendu Bhattacharjee would propose Susmita’s name for the post of chairperson to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).

Sources said a group is opposed to Susmita being projected as the next Silchar Municipality Board chairperson. Susmita won the civic polls from Ward No. 27 with a margin of 1,500 votes.
State Urban Development Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala had earlier said that Sudip Dutta, who was the vice chairman in the previous Board, was a better choice for the post of chairman, but unfortunately, Dutta lost the battle by a narrow margin of 25 votes. Ranjit Roy, who won by 100 votes in Ward No. 15, is the lone commissioner with vast experience in the municipality. But Roy has very few takers.

It is to be noted that Congress won 16 seats in the 28 wards and thus they need no support from the five independent candidates to form the Board.

Meanwhile, Susmita Dev told The Sentinel that she would definitely consider the decision if she was offered the post of chairperson seriously.

She even outlined her planning as to how she would try to complete the half-done projects, taken up by her mother Bithika Dev, who headed the previous Board. THE SENTINEL
