Immediate completion of Silchar-Lumding Broad gauge project demanded

SILCHAR, Sep 1: The Silchar-Lumding Broad Gauge Rupayan Sangram Committee submitted a memorandum to Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi through the Cachar DC yesterday urging him to implement measures for immediate resumption and completion of the Silchar-Lumding Broad Gauge project.

The committee asked the government to complete the gauge-conversion project as soon as possible and said that the State Government was surprisingly apathetic towards the materialization of the project. The memorandum also clearly reiterated that due to government apathy, insurgency problem in North Cachar Hills had been on the rise.

Sources said only 30 per cent of the construction has been completed in the last 13 years. The committee has, therefore, expressed doubts on the sincerity of the Asom Government.

The Silchar-Lumding Board Gauge Rupayan Sangram Committee has further decided to go for a mass movement from the first week of October, 2009, if the government does not come up with measures to complete the construction of the Broad-gauge project.

The memorandum was submitted by Dinendra Narayan Biswas, Prasun Kanti Dev, Pradip Nath, Madhav Ghosh, Ajoy Roy, Subrata Chandra Nath and Dr Maharam Ali on behalf of the Silchar-Lumding Board Gauge Rupayan Sangram Committee. THE SENTINEL
