Susmita Dev set to be Silchar Municipality Board Chairperson

SILCHAR, Sept 11: The stage is all set for the third generation of Dev family becoming the chairperson of the 125-year-old Silchar Municipality Board (SMB). Susmita Dev, daughter of Sontosh Mohan Dev and Bithika Dev, both former chairpersons of SMB, would be elected as the leader of the 17-member Congress Municipality Party tomorrow. According to sources, on Saturday evening Susmita, a practising lawyer of the Supreme Court, will be elected unanimously as the Congress team leader. On Monday, the Board will take oath. Susmita’s grand father late Satindra Mohan Dev was also the chairman of the Board.

Political lobbying was at its peak for the selection of vice-chairman. Ranjit Roy, a veteran in the municipality, was the frontrunner for the coveted post. Vijayendra Pratap Singh, a Hindi-speaking youth close to Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala, may also surprise everyone by snatching the post. Roy, while talking to The Sentinel, claimed that almost all the ward commissioners were in his favour as he was the senior most among them.

A source has, however, hinted that an anti-Dev lobby in the district Congress has not yet given up its plan for election of chairman through secret ballots, but the chance of their success is remote. Sources said, 14 ward commissioners have already put in their signatures in an application addressed to the district Congress president extending their support to Susmita as their leader.
