New bout of tension in Karimganj, Hailakandi

SILCHAR, Nov 3: Tension prevailed in Karimganj as south Karimganj MLA Siddique Ahmed’s car was attacked by miscreants at Nilambazar in Karimganj district last night. Situation in Karimganj has been tense as clash between supporters of Excise Minister Gautam Roy and Siddique Ahmed, which caught momentum in the recent Ainakhal rally episode, does not seem to die so easily.

It has been alleged that the miscreants who attacked Ahmed’s car were pro-Roy cadres and that the miscreants were led by Iqbal Hussain, a Gaon Panchayat secretary close to Roy. It was also alleged that Iqbal was beaten up by Ahmed’s supporters while the former was visiting a site in Nilambazar to monitor the installation of electricity line under the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme.

Meanwhile, AGP leader Sahidul Alom today led a Muslim group to Barni bridge tea estate to protest against the eviction of Muslim families by the garden manager. Labourers working in the tea garden resisted the rally, which further worsened the situation. However, timely intervention by police averted any major incident.

It was further reported that Siddique Ahmed and Karimganj Zila Parishad president Mantaj Ali were accorded a warm welcome by the Progressive Students’ Youth Forum (PSYF) last evening. PYSF had earlier organized a rally for honouring the Ahmed-Ali duo on Sunday but the situation turned violent after another invitee, Sahidul Alom Choudhury, violated the prohibitory order to reach Ainakhal.

Moreover, the presence of Sahidul Alom, a former minister of the Prafulla Mahanta-led AGP government, provoked the people who started pelting stones at the security forces deployed for preventing any untoward incident during the Ainakhal rally, forcing them to open fire leaving a 15-year boy seriously injured along with three others. THE SENTINEL
