Tarun Gogoi’s intervention sought in Silchar Railway station renaming issue

SILCHAR, Dec 16: Members of the Sammilita Sanskritik Mancha (SSM) today staged a demonstration in front of the Cachar  deputy commissioner’s office resenting the decision of the Union Home Ministry for rejecting the proposal to rename Silchar Railway Station as Bhasha Shahid Station. In a memorandum addressed to the Assam Chief Minister through the DC, it was pointed out that the decision of the Centre was most shocking for the people of Barak Valley as considered against the backdrop of the sacrifices of 11 martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of the Bengali language.

Seeking the CM’s intervention on the matter, SSM secretary Biswajit Das urged Tarun Gogoi to take up the issue with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister in Delhi for reconsideration of the decision. He also appreciated the role of the State Government in clearing the necessary file and also for granting a no objection certificate for the renaming of the station.

The people of Barak Valley, Das pointed out, were surprised not only for the rejection by the Union Home Ministry but also for certain remarks which had seriously wounded their sentiments and feelings. By submitting the memorandum, the SSM members hoped that the Chief Minister would take the initiative in removing the hurdles created by the Home Ministry, GOI, for the recognition of the demand of this valley. Otherwise, the mancha cautioned, that it would continue with its democratic agitation. THE SENTINEL
