‘Karimganj district library received 72 Bengali books in five years’

KARIMGANJ, Jan 5: Members of the Karimganj district committee of the Barak Upatyaka Matribhasha Suraksha Samity (BUMSS) were taken aback when they came to know that the directorate of Library Services, Assam has not sent a single Bengali book to the Karimganj District Library during 2009. The BUMSS said in a district like Karimganj where the Bengali population is 95 per cent, the news has come as a blow.

The BUMSS also stated that there were 10,410 Assamese books and 8,730 English books in the Karimganj district library. In view of this discouraging state of affairs BUMSS Karimganj committee president Mahitesh Das and secretary Shibani Biswas, among others, submitted a memorandum to the director of the Library Services, Assam.

BUMSS members, through the memorandum, have requested the director to send books on Bengali language and literature as per the list submitted by the organization to the Karimganj district library. The memorandum further stated that during the last five years, the Karimganj district library received only 72 Bengali books. Expressing their discontent, the signatories said it is a matter of grave concern that despite repeated demands raised by the organization over the last few years for supplying Bengali books to the Library, nothing positive has came out till date.

It seems the directorate is not interested to send Bengali books to the district Library of Karimganj, the president and secretary of BUMSS added. THE SENTINEL
