SILCHAR, Jan 2: The emergency ward of the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) turned into a battle ground today as an irate mob and some junior doctors of the hospital were engaged in a clash following the death of a minor girl in the ward. According to sources, Sania Begum Laskar (4) was brought to the hospital in a critical condition by her parents — Kutub Uddin and Rubi Begum — last evening. The attendants of Sania alleged that she died at around 9 pm last night due to absence of doctors in the emergency ward.
The death of the child led her relatives to pelt stones at the emergency ward. Meanwhile, a photo journalist of a local television channel, Anup Das, was assaulted by some junior doctors for capturing the incident.
CRPF and police personnel led by DSP Ashok Saha and Principal of Medical College Dr SS Dhar rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The Silchar Press Club demanded immediate arrest of the junior doctors within 72 hours for assaulting the photo journalist. The press club also submitted a memorandum to the DC and the SP. The SMCH authorities, on the other hand, convened a meeting. THE SENTINEL
