National Institute of Technology (NIT Silchar)

National Institute of Technology Silchar is one of the institutes of National importance which have been developed under the NIT act. It was originally established as the Regional Engineering College, Silchar in the year 1967.

The institute is built around the scenic view of the banks of river Barak. The Regional Engineering College got the status of National Institute of Technology Silchar in 2002.    

Looking from the infrastructure factor, National Institute of Technology Silchar is ranked as the best institute amongst the NITs. There has been rapid transformation in the Academic as well as infrastructural facilities that are provided to the students. This rapid change has taken place recently in the past four years after the institute got the status of NIT. The campus of the institute is built on a wide area of over 600 acres and also has awe-inspiring scenic view around.

Also there are separate hostels for boys and girls having all the essential facilities. Internet facility is made available for the students from 6 in the evening till 7.30 in the morning during the week days while round the clock internet service is made available during the weekends.

The institute makes use of the advanced technology for teaching as well as also makes available the computing facilities that offer an extended scope for the students to match with the high standards that are required for the rapidly changing technologies.

There are separate departments for the varied engineering and applied courses in the institute. Some of the most prevalent Engineering Departments include the Department of Mechanical engineering, Civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunication engineering as well as electronic and instrumentation engineering. On the other hand, the Applied Departments include the Department of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics as well as Humanities and social sciences.   

The National institute of Technology is well connected by the means of air, road as well as rail transport from Kolkata and Guwahati. Otherwise the institute is also well connected by the roads with the other states in the northern part of India.
