SILCHAR, Jan 22: State Excise Minister Gautam Roy today handed over Rs 10 lakh in cash to the members of a Children Park here for the construction of a concrete canopy which would be named after his father Late Sontosh Kumar Roy.
Goutam Roy along with Karimganj MP Lalit Mohan Suklabaidya laid the foundation stone for the canopy which would be completed by March 22 this year. In this speech Roy categorically said that he never had nurtured any political ambition from Silchar, though some Congress leaders of the town apprehended that he wanted to establish himself as the next candidate for Lok Sabha from Silchar.
Roy further said that he would visit Delhi very soon to press the demand for renaming Silchar Railway Station as Bhasa Sahid Station. Meanwhile, Dr Rajib Kar, on behalf of the Children Park said that Minister Rotan announced that he would donate Rs 10 lakh for the construction of the canopy on his birthday on November 14. Roy had kept his promise for which Kar gratefully thanked him. Other persons who spoke on the occasion were MP Suklabaidya, educationist Bhakti Madhav Chattopadhya and Secretary of Silchar DSA Babul Hore.
