Indefinite road blockade called

Special Correspondent
SILCHAR, Feb 2:
Residents of Tarapur Part-I and Part-VI as well as Topkhana today joined hands together under different banners to impose indefinite blockade of IOC and FCI approach road which has been reduced to rubbles without any trace of metalling.

The Development Committee of the area backed by different organizations which included Naba Kiran, Nganthoibi Lup, Tarapur Tokorgram Mahila Samaj Kalyan Samiti has decided to continue the blockade from today till the approach road is properly improved and upgraded.

Amal Singh attached with Road Development Committee, said the only approach passage under PWD which links IOC and FCI depots with the NH-54 and serves as the only connectivity for 10,000 population of Manipuris and Bengalees, Hindu and Muslim, has been in this deplorable condition since 2004.

The condition is ever worsening as the PWD (R) has remained quite apathetic and indifferent to the persistent demand of the people of the area who have to suffer immensely.

Amal Singh added to say the road of half a kilometre length only could easily be taken up for repair by either IOC or FCI.

But, both these central organizations have also turned a blind eye to it. Hundreds of commercial vehicles take to this road to reach IOC and FCI.

The impact of blockade could easily be felt on the economy if no vehicle could bring in petroleum products or food grains for public supply.

Describing the link road as their lifeline, Bimalendu Singh pointed out all that the residents of the villages around want is repair and maintenance of the road by strengthening and widening it since besides being in worst shape, it has become accident prone which is quite frequent. The people insist that this small stretch of connectivity could also be improved by including it under PMGSY.

In the meantime, the Cachar deputy commissioner Gautam Ganguly visited the troubled spot and talked to the agitationists and assured them of proper action from his end.

But, they seem not convinced and have expressed their resolve to continue the blockade unless concrete action plan is taken up. The leaders of different political parties have added to the hotting up of situation with their speeches by making personal appearances in order to share the suffering of the residents. source: the sentinel assam
