Assam University, Silchar has decided to constitute a sports board in the university for the development of sports infrastructure in the three Barak Valley districts. A meeting was organised in this connection on the university campus under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor Tapadhir Bhattacharjee. Officials of the District Sports Associations of Silchar, Hailakandi and Karimganj attended the meeting, while some veteran players were also present.
The speakers urged the university officials to take steps to pave the way for the development of sports infrastructure in various colleges of Barak Valley and the adjoining hill districts. They proposed that the university make provisions for special funds to develop sports infrastructure at educational institutions under Assam University to encourage college students to participate in sports. Retired FIFA referee Mrinal Kanti Roy, sports organiser-cum-veteran athlete Samsul Haque Barbhuiya and the president and secretaries of district sports associations of Hailakandi and Karimganj addressed the meeting.
