Assam University’s decision prepared ground for student unrest

SILCHAR, Sept 10: Irresponsible and indecisive moves by the Assam University authority has virtually prepared a ground for student unrest in this premier institution. ABVP had already staged a dharna and road blockade twice in front of the University entrance demanding student body elections to be conducted before pujas, as announced, and subsequently postponed by the University authority.

Sources said, on Wednesday, ABVP cadres also burnt the effigy of vice chancellor Prof Tapodhir Bhattacharjee. It is to be noted that the University authority had earlier declared that direct election of the students’ union would be held on September 10, but, due to some unknown reason they subsequently retracted from the decision arguing that formal approval for holding election from the Ministry of Human Resources Development had not yet been received.

On this, the ABVP countered explanation questioning how come the University authority could declare the election date without formal approval from the concerned ministry, as claimed by the University. Dr Alok Sen, the acting Registrar, had reportedly admitted that it was their fault. But, sources indicated that the University authority had actually bowed down to the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress.

University authority, however, assured that the election would be held after the puja vacation. But ABVP countered that after the puja vacations, students would not be able to attend the election as they would be busy for their exams. ABVP suspected that the NSUI might take the advantage of the situation to get their candidates elected.

Meanwhile, NSUI in a press statement bounced backed with the allegation that the ABVP, with vested interest, is planning to vitiate the academic environment of the University. NSUI district president Mehboob Ahmed Barbhuiya claimed, the ABVP has no organizational base in the University as they had failed to form an unit in the university.

Welcoming the University’s decision to hold direct election for the first time, the NSUI leaders said they demanded creation of three additional posts for smoothening student participation. NSUI had sought the intervention of the district administration apprehending that the ABVP has allegedly hired some outsiders to create law and order situation inside the University campus. Dusty town: The main roads of Silchar town are in a shabby condition. These roads are under repair for a long time. The half repaired road is creating dust which is affecting the people mostly the school children. It has been noticed that in every house one person is suffering from the dust allergy.

The problem has occurred due to the sudden discontinuation of Master Drainage Project. This drainage project is in a half done condition. The main road from Capital Travel to Holy Cross School is being repaired at a very slow progress. Sometimes the roads become so critical that during day time a dusty haze prevails.

The people said that dust is not allowing them to go out from the house. It is also affecting their day to day work. On the other hand, ill-effect of dust is cough which spreads in the houses very quickly. A long queue has been noticed in the chamber of the doctor with such complaints specially of the children.

Sources said that Silchar Municipality Board (SMB) is responsible for watering the road. But SMB is not showing any responsibility regarding this. On the other hand, Sudip Dutta, vice chairman, SMB said the roads are under the PWD. The repairing work is done under this department. The contractors are being paid for watering on the road. However, the public is unaware of this fact. Although for public interest, the SMB provided watering for some days which cost three lakh rupees. But payment is still due. Dutta has regretted the problem faced by the public.source: assam tribune

Beacons of modern art

A stroll around the State Art Gallery in Rabindra Bhawan, where four painters from Assam University, Silchar, held an exhibition titled Why 4 left little scope to ask “whys” but did make one lip a lot of “thank gods”.

Well, thank god that at least contemporary art in Assam is extracting some “wows” when music and theatre draw only dubious “mixed reactions” and cinema is almost missing. Inaugurated by painter-filmmaker Pulak Gogoi on August 27, the exhibition had 30 splendid artworks on display.

Artist Sivan G, who originally hails from Kerala, stood out for his refreshing perspective, with an extensive use of lines and patches, which created a sense of abstraction. The works were striking for the near-absence of human figures.

Of the very few that had human forms, the one titled Imperative Song must be mentioned.
It shows a black girl placed in three different segments, in white, red and yellow attires.
The composition is simply marvellous.

Meghali Goswami, probably the only one from Assam to have earned a PhD in modern art, showed 12 of her paintings — mostly human figures in various moods.
The one titled Perception, showing a human face with different technological elements was arresting. The use of circles and straight lines besides the haunting colour scheme made the work spellbinding.

Nirmal Kanti Roy’s works are a celebration of “openness” amid the chaos of modern life. The common element in all his works is a tree leaf and the dominant hues are green and red.
Another significant aspect of his work is movement, which he creates by means of fantastic curves.

The work titled Lenient Imitation, too, bears the stamp of Roy’s distinct imaginative design and colour sense. Baharul Islam Laskar, like Goswami, concentrates on human form and kicks up a restlessness and disturbance through his lines. source: telegraph india

Mudslide kills five including a pregnant woman in Cachar

- Victims include a pregnant woman engaged by DRDA in earth-cutting Source: Telegraph India

A crowd gathers at the site where the five labourers were killed in a mudslip on Tuesday. A Telegraph picture
Silchar May 20: A pregnant woman filling in for a relative was among five road workers killed in an avalanche on hill they were cutting in a Cachar village this afternoon.

Around 12, villagers of Srinagar, about 5km from Silchar, heard a huge roar followed by wails from the hill where labourers engaged by the Cachar District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) were collecting soil for laying a road to Rajartilla village.

“Suddenly there was a roar, and before we could gauge what was happening, huge mounds of mud, along with loose soil, came rolling down the hillock,” said Amulaya Das, a peasant.
The earth-cutting had begun since morning and by the noon there was a gaping hole in the hill.

All the victims — Bhanu Das, 65, Nanda Das, 48, Sagar Bagti, 28, Raghunath Rabidas, 30, and Soma Bagti, 25 — were working for the DRDA under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Soma was five months’ pregnant and was not supposed to report for duty, as her name did not figure on the list of workers for today.
She was included following a last-minute change in the list after one of her relatives, who was also enlisted as a worker in the programme, pleaded for replacement.

Soma’s inconsolable mother kept repeating how she had been looking forward to the birth in the family by end-September.
The two injured, Suhit Malakar and Birbal Malakar, were taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Ghoonger. The expenses were borne by the district administration.

Cachar deputy commissioner Goutam Ganguli said he has ordered monetary relief of Rs 50,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased under the chief minister’s Jibanjyoti scheme.

Policemen were deployed in the village after angry residents threw stones at a few cars and trucks to protest the “mishap”.
A magisterial probe has been ordered into the circumstances leading to the mishap. Cachar DRDA director Naresh Ghosh, who is also an additional deputy commissioner, will conduct the inquiry and submit the report in a week’s time.
