July 9, Health Minister Dr Sharma was given a warm welcome by the District Sports Association (DSA) of Hailakandi at the Santosh Kumar Roy Pavilion of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Stadium. Dr Sharma also visited the Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) and expressed serious concern over the delay of the developmental works under the 100 crore package. He opined that works should be completed within a very short time. He requested the chairman of the governing body of SMCH and Minister Gautam Roy to look after the works. He also attended a meeting at the Cachar Cancer Hospital and handed over Rs 50 lakh and said that the rest Rs 50 lakh will also be released soon. It may be mentioned that Dr. Sharma announced sanction of Rs one crore for development of the Cachar Cancer Hospital. Addressing the meeting held on the occasion, Dr. Sharma said that the State Government was very much concerned about the cancer situation in Barak Valley and said they will sanction more money for the hospital in future. He said that cancer department will be opened in all medical colleges of the state. A 200 bed cancer hospital will be started in the GMCH, while a 50 bed similar hospital will be started in SMCH soon. A 300 bed maternity hospital will be started in SMCH and the new buildings of Orthopedics and Medicine department will be constructed. Rs 16 crores have been sanctioned, he announced. He further announced that the Medical Council of India has increased the seat capacity of SMCH from 65 to 100 this year and the state government will request the council to increase it upto 150 next year.
