Silchar: Suspected miscreants today killed a BJP member at Singaria market area near Patharkandi in Karimganj district of Assam.
His body bore multiple injuries and it was suspected that the deceased, also a trader, was killed with the help of sharp weapons, said a senior police official in Karimganj.
As the news of the killing of the BJP member spread like wildfire, people came out on the streets and ransacked a number of shops, owned by a particular community.
SP (Karimganj) Mihir Goswami and other senior police officials, accompanied by large contingent of armed police, rushed to the place and helped in bringing the situation under control.
None had been arrested so far in this connection.
He said at least four miscreants, suspected to be involved in the murder, were absconding and police has been trying to nab them. Dog squad had been pressed into service, he added.
Apart from setting up a police picket in the market, security forces had been patrolling the area. The situation was tense but under control.
