Silchar Polytechnic had 100 per cent placements in the last semester
Dec. 18: There is still a year to go before Silchar Polytechnic in Meherpur turns 50, but the college is already in celebration mode. And for more reasons than one.
The institution has received a Rs 4 crore grant from the World Bank with which it has constructed new buildings, bought the latest and best laboratory equipment and is planning a number of other development projects.
Principal S.R. Choudhury said the projects would be a fitting start to the golden jubilee celebrations a little over a year from now.
Set up in 1960, the college is one of nine such educational centres spread across Assam that offers a three-year diploma course in various engineering branches.
The college now has 660 students, studying civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics-telecommunications diploma courses.
The principal now hopes that their long-standing wish for a computer science department would be fulfilled on the eve of golden jubilee celebrations.
With the World Bank funds, the college already has two three-storey buildings for classrooms and its laboratories are equipped with the latest gadgets.
But that is just part of the reason for the early celebrations. For the first time, Silchar Polytechnic had 100 per cent placements in the last semester.
Corporate houses and a few public sector ones recruited all the final-semester students this year.
Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Punj Lloyd were among the recruiters.
But a dearth of teachers continues to be a pressing problem for the technical institute. As against the sanctioned posts of 57 faculty dons, the current strength is 30 — a deficit of 27.
Besides, both the faculty and the students have been demanding that the syllabus be updated, keeping in mind the needs of the industry.
The syllabus was last updated three years ago, though teachers feel that changes should be brought about annually. source: the telegraph india
