GUWAHATI, March 20: In their first joint address to the local media after the successful finalization of the AGP-BJP seat-sharing arrangement, both parties today sounded optimistic of the combine sweeping the forthcoming parliamentary polls, even as the AGP said it is yet to decide on formally joining the BJP-led NDA.
The joint press conference saw the presence of AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary, BJP national vice-president and candidate for Guwahati seat Bijoya Chakraborty, BJP Northeast co-observer Sudangshu Mittal, amongst others. The upbeat meet among both parties could be gauged from Bijoya Chakraborty’s comments as she said, “The AGP-BJP combine will root out the Congress and sweep the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.”
Stating that there would be no joint election manifesto, both parties today spelt out the ‘principles’ on which the seat-sharing arrangement has been agreed upon. Patowary said, “Though there will be no joint manifesto, both parties would lay focus on the same issues. The understanding reached between both parties is based on principles, which reflect the top priority demands and needs of the people of the State.”
Patowary informed mediapersons that a 14-member State-level committee of the AGP-BJP has been formed for smooth coordination between both the parties. “Such committees would be formed at the district and Lok Sabha constituency levels,” he added.
Elaborating on the principles, the AGP chief said the BJP-led NDA, if voted to power, would stop infiltration, seal the Indo-Bangladesh border completely, free the land illegally encroached by Bangladesh, update the National Register of Citizens and issue photo identity cards.
Instead of concentrating on an armed solution, the NDA would lay more emphasis on a peaceful resolution of the militancy problem, Patowary said while adding that the NDA would also declare Asom’s flood and erosion as a national problem.
The AGP, however, is yet to decide on formally joining the BJP-led NDA. Stating that such a decision would be taken only in the post-poll scenario, Patowary said, “No decision has been taken on joining the NDA as yet.”
Refusing to comment on the possibilities of the AGP joining the NDA, BJP Northeast co-observer Sudhangsu Mittal said, “For the time-being we have a seat-sharing arrangement here, what the future holds can not be said now.” THE SENTINEL
