57.51% females cast votes in Karimganj constituency

KARIMGANJ, April 18: More than 64 per cent electorates cast their votes in Karimganj (SC) Parliamentary constituency, comprising Karimganj and Hailakandi district and Tapang Block area of Cachar district. Though Tapang Block falls in the district of Cachar, the area is a part of Algapur LA constituency of Hailakandi district and hence included in the Lok Sabha constituency of Karimganj which has eight Assembly segments viz Ratabari, Patharkandi, North Karimganj, South Karimganj, Badarpur (all in Karimganj district), Hailakandi, Katlicherra and Algapur. Female voters cast only 57.51 per cent while male voters polled 70.48 per cent in the constituency, election of which had been held on April 16.

Of the total number of 10,66,730 voters in the constituency, 6,85,671 exercised their franchise this time while in the 14th Parliamentary Election of 2004, a total of 6,71,491 voters cast their votes in Karimganj LS constituency (reserved for scheduled castes) against a total number of 9,79,105 voters.

The Assembly segment wise break up of the votes polled this time are–– Ratabari (SC)- 75,733 (57.11 per cent), Patharkandi- 91,032 (66.81 per cent), North Karimganj- 92,201 (61.66 per cent), South Karimganj- 81,957 (60.21 per cent), Badarpur- 75,394 (62.06 per cent), Hailakandi- 86,006 (68.72 per cent), Katlicherra- 95,320 (68.02 per cent) and Algapur- 88,028 (70.07 per cent). The district of Hailakandi polled more than the district of Karimganj.

All the three major parties viz Congress, BJP and AUDF have been claiming that the peoples’ verdict would be in favour of their candidates in the Karimganj constituency. It is to be seen if Lalitmohan Suklabaidya of Congress can retain the seat. Other two prospective candidates are Sudhangshu Das (BJP) and Rajesh Malah (AUDF). THE SENTINEL

EWTCC to celebrate May Day
HAILAKANDI, April 18: The Employees,s Workers and Teachers Co-ordination Committee (EWTCC) has decided to celebrate May Day on May 1 here in a befitting manner.

The decision was taken in a joint meeting of different Employees and Workers Associations held recently and made an appeal to all section of working people to participate and extend all possible assistance to make the programme a success.

The meeting discussed at length the present situation including price rise, announcement of Pay Commission Report and its implementation.

The meeting was addressed among others by N Bhattacharjee, A Jalil Laskar, Chintaharan Sutradhan Dipak Kundu and A Odud Mazarbhuiya. THE SENTINEL

Woodcutter murders colleague
SILCHAR, April 18: A woodcutter was murdered in Dholai area yesterday after a scuffle with a fellow woodcutter. The murderer has been identified as Rajkumar Gour of Sorupathar in Golaghat district, though the murdered person could not be properly identified till now. The only information gained till the filing of this report was that he was a Nepali and his surname was Gurung. Gour had reportedly confessed to the police that they both were intoxicated and he suddenly hit Gurung with a piece of wood leaving him dead on the spot. The body of Gurung is still lying in the morgue of Silchar Medical College and Hospital as nobody from his family has approached the hospital authorities to claim it. Gour was produced in the Court today and has been sent in police remand. THE SENTINEL
