SILCHAR, April 13: It was the Indian National Congress that saved Asom when the AGP and BJP were not born. Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said this in an election rally here today.
Making a veiled attack mainly on the BJP, the Congress president categorically stated that the country was safe only at the hands of the Congress. “Today the BJP wants to mislead the people with a baseless allegation that Manmohan Singh is a weak Prime Minister. They forgot when BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani was the Deputy Prime Minister, they couldn’t even save Parliament from the militant attack,” Sonia hit back at the saffron brigade amid thunderous applause.
Daring the bandh called by the ACKHSA, at least 10,000 people assembled at Town Club playground to get a glimpse of Sonia Gandhi. When Sonia arrived in the ground in an IAF helicopter, people welcomed her with ‘Jai Ho’ slogan. But Sonia’s extempore speech in Hindi dampened the enthusiasm of the public. People were eager to hear some concrete commitments from her on the Lumding-Silchar broad gauge conversion. But Sonia’s 20-minute-long speech did not touch any local issues. She, however, made it clear that in Lok Sabha elections voters should elect their representatives on the basis of national prospective. “The opposition has no definite issues in this election,” Sonia said, and added with the pledge of “Bharat Nirman” Congress now seeks the mandate of the people. Referring to the ever-growing menace of global terrorism, she claimed the Congress is not only determined, but also capable of handling the problem. The opposition wants to divide the nation on communal lines, she added.
Speaking in the occasion, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the Congress never believes in vote-bank politics. THE SENTINEL
