SILCHAR, April 11: MC Jauhari, Commissioner Hills and Barak Valley Division held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner’s and Superintendent of Police, Karimganj Parliamentary constituency.Three observers Dr AT Kumbha, IAS, Anita Tegta, IAS and P Oram, IRS were also present in the meeting. Earlier Jauhari visited the Indo-Bangladesh border at Sutarkandi to review the security agreement in the wake of Parliamentary election and talked to the local BSF officials. Jauhari stressed the need for early starting of Trade Centre in Karimganj district’s Sutarkandi on the Indo-Bangladesh border. The Divisional Commissioner was talking to the concerned officials at the Trade centre, Sutarkandi yesterday with a view to make functional of the centre, as because this was inaugurated in January 2007 and has not yet started functioning.
Jauhari urged upon the customs officials to start functioning of their Superintendents’ offices as they have been allotted accommodation in the Centre. He also talked to the Bank and BSNL officials for starting of one Bank branch and Telephone exchange. The Divisional Commissioner was informed in the meeting that a post office has already been opened the centre.
Jauhari also talked to the office bearers of Export Import Association to acquaint himself about their problems. It was revealed from the meeting that coals are exported from India while waist cloths, fruit juice, wooden furniture and crokeries are imported from Bangladesh. There is scope for export of paper, orange and ginger to Bangladesh, the meeting was informed.
The custom officials informed the meeting that Central Excise duties of Rs 29 crore 39 lakh for export and 1 crore 76 lakh for import have been realized during the last financial year 2008-2009.
The meeting was also attended by Dr Angamathu, Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj, Upen Deka, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Karimganj and by Haran Dey, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relation.
It may be mentioned that the trade centre was constructed with an amount of Rs 10 crore given by Union government and was formally inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Commerce, Joyram Ramesh on January 12, 2007. THE SENTINEL
