GUWAHATI, April 10 – After a gap of two years NF Railway Sports Association regained the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy emerging champions in the Elite Group Senior Inter District Cricket Championship.
On the final day of the four-day summit clash at the Nehru Stadium here today, NF Railway SA recorded a 10-wicket victory against Silchar District Sports Association.
Although it was expected that the match would be ended in a draw, the Silchar batsmen were in hurry and lost all the second innings wickets at the total of 161. NF Railway, which took 105-run first innings lead scoring 307, required only 57 runs for an outright victory and they achieved it in 10.1 overs without losing any second innings wicket.
Utpal Medhi, who was unbeaten on 66 yesterday, completed his deserving century this morning. He scored 104 off 137 deliveries, which virtually put NF Railway team in a commendable position. His 167-minute innings was studded with 14 boundaries and two sixes.
Railway tail enders Mrigen Talukdar (5), Arlen Konwar (17), RK Yadav (10) and Gyan Prakash (5) could not contribute much to their total as Silchar medium pacer Bishal Tiwary today captured three wickets. Sadiq Imran Choudhury was the other Silchar wicket taker today.
Conceding a reasonable lead the Silchar batsmen should have applied themselves to bat through out the remaining part of the final day. But they started losing wickets from the very beginning in the second knock. Barring Rehan Zamil Mazumder, who scored 77 off 52 balls, no other batsman could show the concentration to stay at the crease. After 165 minutes of batting whole team tumbled at the team’s second innings total of 161.
The first innings bowling hero Gyan Prakash again turned successful and came out with a five-wicket haul. The tricky spinner virtually made the Silchar batsmen danced at his tune and spent only 44 runs for those five wickets. Mrigen Talukdar and Arlen Konwar took two wickets each while Sarupam Purkayastha scalped one.
The Railway openers Parag Das and Pritam Debnath took no time to settle down and started punishing the Silchar bowlers with a clear intention of cornering the match at the earliest. Pritam smacked 44 off 31 balls while Parag required 30 deliveries for his unbeaten 13. Pritam hit seven fours and two sixes.
In the closing function Sudipta Choudhury, Chief Operating Officer, Bharti Airtel, Assam Cricket Association (ACA) secretary Bikash Baruah, vice president Bhakti Medhi, treasurer Ganashyam Baruah, GB members Biswanath Saha, Imdad Hussaian were present and they gave away the prizes.
