Silchar: Keeping an eye on burgeoning young voters in the country, Congress president and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi on Monday pledged that Congress was committed to realize the dreams of the youth.
Addressing a party's election rally at Silchar in South Assam, Sonia said,"About 70 per cent of the country’s total population are below the age of 35 years. The youth have a dream and the Congress is with the youth to help them realize their dream."
"The Congress is focused on the over all development of all sections of the people including poor, downtrodden and women. Vote for Congress to form a strong government at the Centre. Every election has its own significance but Lok Sabha election is about India's future dreams," Sonia said while canvassing for party candidates Santosh Mohan Deb and Lalit Mohan Suklavaidya contesting from Silchar and Karimganj Parliamentary constituencies in South Assam dominated by religious and linguistic minority people.
She hit out at the BJP for terming Dr Manmohan Singh as a weak Prime Minister and said it was the BJP-led NDA government that had released a dreaded terrorist (Masood Azhar) at Afghanistan in the Kandahar episode.
The country's Parliament was attacked when BJP leader L K Advani was the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.
Referring to vexed insurgency problem in Assam and the Northeast, Sonia said "The youth should realize that violence doesn't lead to solution to any problem. Solution lies in only democratic process."
She recalled former prime minister Late Rajiv Gandhi's love for Assam and his contribution towards restoration of peace and acceleration of all round development of the state by signing the Assam Accord in 1985 with the leaders of Assam Agitation.
Earlier in the day Sonia had attended two more election rallies at Shillong in Meghalaya and Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh. THE SHILLONG TIMES
