Tight security in Silchar for Sonia rally

Correspondent
HAILAKANDI, April 12 – The district administration has made all security arrangements for the visit of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to Silchar tomorrow.

Gandhi will address an election meeting at Silchar India Club ground tomorrow at 3 pm in favour of Congress candidate Santosh Mohan Dev. She will be accompanied by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, APPC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita, AICC general secretary Keshab Rao, among others.

On the other hand, the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA) has called for a 12-hour Cachar bandh tomorrow in protest against the visit of Sonia. ACKHSA has also called a ‘janata curfew’ tomorrow.

President of the central committee of ACKHSA, Rupam Nandi Purkayastha said their protest show was due to non-completion of the conversion work of Silchar-Lumding broad gauge railway line. He alleged that the gauge conversion work started in 1997 and since then it has become an issue both for the Centre and State during elections.

Purkayastha alleged that due to this the people of Barak Valley, Tripura, Mizoram and a part of Manipur were facing extreme communication problems. He appealed to all sections of the people of the valley to boycott Sonia Gandhi. ASSAM TRIBUNE
