AUNTEA move CBI against Assam University VC

NEW DELHI, May 2: A delegation of the Assam University Non-Teaching Employees’ Association (AUNTEA) led by its president Debashis Chakravarty moved the CBI demanding an inquiry into, what the association said, the various anomalies in appointment and promotion in the univerisity under its Vice Chancellor Topodhir Bhattacharya. The CBI team submitted its allegations against the Vice Chancellor of the univerity to the CBI head office in New Delhi yesterday.

AUNTEA president Debashis Chakravarty said: “During the last one-and-a-half years since when Bhattacharya came at the helm of affairs in the univerity as the Vice Chancellor, irregularies are going on in a massive way. We have requested the CBI to conduct a thorough inquiry into the activities of the VC in the interest of the only university of South Asom.”

AUNTEA general secretary Sudip Chakravarty said: “Before moving the CBI, we briefed the All India Central University Association (AICUA) of the current state of affairs in Assam Univerity. AICUA president RS Rana assured us of seeking intervention of the President of India, if need be, into the anomalies for the greater interest of Assam Univerity.”

Allegations against the Vice Chancellor are that he has not prepared any clear-cut appointment and promotion policy, and he appoints new employees and promotes the existing ones at his own will.

A source in the UGC also said the commission has received numerous allegations against the Assam Univerity Vice Chancellor. Such allegations have also been received by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD). Allegations against the VC will be raised in Parliament on time, they said. THE SENTINEL
