KARIMGANJ, May 2: The construction works of Assam type barracks under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Project (IHSDP) at Karimganj town are substandard, alleges CPI (M). While talking to mediapersons here at the CPI(M)’s party office in Karimganj district, committee secretary Nirmal Dey said the ongoing Rs 5.5 crore project which is being constructed by Gaisal Construction Corporation appears to be a total failure since the quality of all items of work is questionable.
Construction for 208 units from a total of 464 units have already been undertaken, some of which are on the verge of completion. But observers here feel, majority of the barracks having brick walled partitions are not accessible as the front side of the barracks have already been submerged in water and in this rainy season, the houses meant for those below the poverty line card holders are likely to be submerged since the land selected for the project is very much low-lying having a sort embankment all around.
Dey demanded a review of the plan and estimate of the project if the present administration of Karimganj municipality Debarshi Bhattarjee’s claim, that the work has been progressing according to the sanctioned plan is to be believed. Two RCC guard walls of the project have also collapsed recently. Moreover, kutcha drains six metres wide have also been reduced to 1 to 1.2 metres in the undergoing project which further irked the people of Karimganj. THE SENTINEL
