SILCHAR, May 15 – The Cachar district administration is on high alert over the possibility that miscreants may create problems on the counting day tomorrow.
The issue was discussed in the conference room of Returning Officer as well as the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Gautam Ganguly recently. During the meeting, Ganguly said the administration has identified at least 20 miscreants who are indulging in mispropaganda to create confusion over the functioning of the administration, which had successfully conducted the Silchar LS election on April 16 last.
In an apparent warning to the ‘conspirators,’ Ganguly said whosoever creates problems for the administration would be booked under the National Security Act (NSA). On the other hand, Additional SP, PR Kar said that a militant group has been trying to create problem for the entire counting system and cases would be registered against those found either creating law and order situation or spreading rumour. However, he mentioned that there is no lapse in security arrangement. Police has posted four watch towers in each corner of the ISBT complex to meet suspected attempt by the miscreants where EVMs have been kept.
In the press meet Ganguly spoke about the incident that took place at ISBT recently, where agents of some of the political parties challenged government officials carrying computers. The government employees had gone to the ISBT to instal Internet connection as directed by the Election Commission. Ganguly further said that the administration would take strict action against those who would pose hindrances for the officials discharging their duties.
On the other hand, some political parties feel this is nothing but a conspiracy. BJP candidate Kabindra Purkayastha and AUDF MLA Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuiya had reached the spot immediately as hundreds of people gathered there violated Section 144 of the CrPC. ADC BC Nath and other government employees were hurt by the mob, forcing them to come back with the computers without installing the Internet.
Mazarbhuiya told mediapersons that he had informed Gautam Ganguly about the incident, but the latter was not aware of the process of installation. But in the press meet, Ganguly denied the statement asserting that being the Returning Officer he was well informed. It was pre-planned and part of an organised plan to criticise the administration and create confusion among the common people regarding the fairness of the election process in the district.
Ganguly said there has been no lapse in the administrative process which was evident from the fact that till now no political party has filed any objection with the EC except one by the chief election agent of the BJP candidate. Security arrangements have been tightened to thwart any attack on the ISBT complex. ASSAM TRIBUNE
