GUWAHATI, May 12: Works of the four-lane East-West Corridor started in Asom in June 2000 under the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). In accordance with the standing norms, works of the Corridor have to be completed in 30 months in some places and in 33 months in some other places, but even after nine years not even 50 per cent of works of the project is completed. If the work proceeds at the current pace, the project will not be completed even in another nine years. The responsibility of translating this dream project into a reality in Asom is that of the Union Surface Transport Ministry and the Asom Government. Are they sincere enough to perform their responsibility?
In Asom, East-West Corridor runs through Srirampur, Rakhaldubi, Barpeta Road, Nalbari, Baihata Chariali, Guwahati, Jagiroad, Nagaon, Doboka, NC Hills and Silchar.
Six construction companies, including Gamon India, TVC, Valesa Engineering and CES, had met the Asom Chief Secretary recently and told him that they could not carry out the works of the corridor in NC Hills due to lack of adequate security cover for their workers. Works of the project came to a grinding halt in NC Hills. When NHAI’s data till January this year are scanned, it is seen that not in a single district 50 per cent work of the project is completed. For the delay of project works in these districts, the construction companies cannot blame it on security hiccups.
Till January this year, according to NHAI data, works of the East-West Corridor done in various districts of the State are 3.55 per cent in NC Hills, 15.57 per cent in Kokrajhar, 10.6 per cent in Chirang, 36.93 per cent in Bongaigaon, 29.51 per cent in Barpeta, 27.75 per cent in Nalbari, 25,28 per cent in Kamrup (Metro), 21 per cent in Kamrup, 25 per cent in Morigaon, 30.25 per cent in Nagaon and 35.85 per cent in Cachar.
