Dog carcass found in PHE water tank

SILCHAR, May 19: The carcass of a dog was found floating a few days back in the PHE water tank in Meherpur here. Local residents and organizations have demanded an in-depth investigation on the matter. A local organization, Dear Boys Club, has threatened the authorities with agitation if the matter is not looked into immediately.

On Thursday, a memorandum bearing signature of many residents of that area was presented before the Executive engineer of PHE Tapas Roy at the initiative of Dear Boys Club. The members of the club demanded to know why, even after submitting regular taxes, the residents of Meherpur are being supplied with polluted drinking water.

Later, Dear Boys Club president Anwar Hussain Mazumder stated before the media – “Many people are dependent on this plant of PHE and yet, dead carcasses of dogs float in the water tank. This is because there is no protective shade over the reservoir. There is very chance of an epidemic breaking out, skin diseases and ailments are also not impossible to occur in such a case.”

The club members collected samples of drinking water from the reservoir and demanded that the PHE authorities conduct tests of those samples and ascertain how much organic material from the dog’s carcass had polluted the water and that a proper forensic test should be made was the demand of the club members.
A copy of the memorandum was also submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of the Cachar, Gautam Ganguly. THE SENTINEL
