GUWAHATI, May 15: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today reviewed the law-and-order situation in NC Hills at a meeting with top-level officials of the district at Haflong and asked the district administration to take the toughest possible action against those involved in the violence.
According to sources, Gogoi also assured the people of the hill district that works of the East-West Corridor and Railway Gauge Conversion projects would not be allowed to be halted due to insurgency. “We have already taken up the matter with the Centre,” sources quoted the Chief Minister as saying. Gogoi further said a force is behind the recent spate of violence in NC Hills, and the force may be based in the State or outside.
The Chief Minister also visited the refugee camp at Maibong and took stock of the situation there. He has asked the district administration to see that there is no scarcity of essential commodities in the district. He said the State Government will prepare a special package for all-round development of the district. He also handed over cheques of Rs 3 lakh each to the next of kin of each of those killed in the recent violence. THE SENTINEL
