May Day observed in Silchar

HAILAKANDI, May 9 – May Day was observed in Silchar with various programmes. The prgrammes started with the hoisting of flag by the president of CITU, Durgesh Purkayastha. The general secretary of AITUC, Anjan Paul offered floral tributes to the martyrs.

The meeting held on the occasion was addressed by Adhiraj Mahapatra, Madhav Ghosh, Shyamdeo Kurmi, Subrata Nath and Bidyut Deb among others. The meeting mainly raised the demand for the fixation of eight hours’ duty for workers. The demands raised in the meeting are the framing of laws in the unorganised sectors, social security to the workers, cessation of discrimination against the casual workers etc.

They alleged that the workers and labourers are the worst victims of the discrimination of the Government and industrial authorities. They are facing constant social and economic threat and urged the workers of the country to unite together to fight against economic and social justice.

A big procession of the members of various trade unions was brought out in Silchar with banners and placards. The processionists also raised the slogan. ASSAM TRIBUNE
