Security hurdle for Lumding-Silchar E-W Corridor

GUWAHATI, May 8: Representatives of the six construction companies which have been engaged in the 140-km Lumding-Silchar stretch of the East-West Corridor work met Asom the Chief Secretary yesterday and said that the atmosphere in the particular stretch of the highway was not conducive for going ahead with the construction work. The Chief Secretary requested the company representatives to go ahead with the construction work and that the State Government was ready to provide security for them. He asked the representatives to send top officials of their respective companies to talk to the government on their necessities. Sources, however, said the Chief Secretary could not convince the representatives.

The companies engaged in the Lumding-Silchar stretch of the corridor include Gamon India, Velesa and Hindustan Construction Company. A number of technicians of the companies were killed, kidnapped and extorted. THE SENTINEL
