SMILE artistes get kudos in Kolkata

SILCHAR, May 3: Locals performing under the banner SMILE, a socio- cultural organization, had left an impressionable mark in the Sangeet Mela in Kolkata organized by information and Broadcasting Department of West Bengal. SMILE team comprised of prominent artistes like Bidhar Laskar, Dikshita Dey Purkayastha, Chandrani Sarmah, Doyel Dhar, Ritu Naha, Kamalika Chakraborty while Soumitra Dutta and Alok Chakraborty accompanied them as team managers.

The Silchar artistes performed at Rabindra Sadan open stage recently. Their performance was well appreciated by the audience and Chandrani Sarmah was signed by Raga Music Company for their next musical venture. A part from this, Bangla Sangeet Natak Academy has consented to arrange training for upcoming artistes of Silchar in Kolkata free of cost. SMILE artistes had a chance to get some tips from stalwarts like Arati Mukharjee, Jatileshwar Mukharjee, Usha Uthup, Nirmala Mishra, Sri Kumar Chattapadhya, Raghav Chattapadhya, Amit Singh Arora, Swagata Laxmi Bandhopashya while eminent singers Shibaji Chattapadhya and Arundhati Holme Chowdhury guided them right from the beginning.They whole-heartedly thanked SMILE president Swarnali Chowdhury for her patronage and guidance. Meanwhile, Ritu Naha and Kamalika Chakraborty were undergoing training in Kolkata under Jay Bhattacharjee of Zee Bangla channel. It is to be noted that Nirjhar Sarmah and Saptaparna Chakraborty who carved a niche for themselves in all India platform were first promoted by SMILE. THE SENTINEL

Two Bangladeshis held
SILCHAR, May 3: BSF had nabbed two Bangladeshi youths who were trying to sneak into the Indian territory through Jalalpur border at Katigorah. They were handed over to Katigorah police who later pushed them back to Bangladesh. The illegal infiltrators have been identified as Ayub Ahmed and Salim Ahmed. Katigorah PS OC Shyamal Bhattacharjee said patrolling in Indo-Bangla border has been intensified recently. THE SENTINEL

Man and his family held on charge of murdering wife
SILCHAR, May 3: Silchar police arrested Sajal Das, his mother Niyoti Das and brither Ripon for allegedly murdering his wife Rakhi Das. The arrests were made after Surajit Das, brother of Rakhi lodged an FIR with the police that his sister has been burnt to death by her in-laws including her husband Sajal whom she was married off to five years back.

Surajit in his FIR had also named Krishna Das, father of Sajal, though he had not been arrested till now. A police source said that Rakhi was admitted with severe burn injuries on Friday midnight at Silchar Medical College and Hospital and she succumbed to her injury immediately.

Surajit further alleged that he was not even informed by his sister’s in-laws. Meanwhile, Sajal in his statement to police had claimed that Rakhi caught fire from the kerosene lamp and he was not present at the time of the accident. THE SENTINEL
