Abnormal rise in price of sugar in Barak Valley

SILCHAR, July 5: For the last seven months, people (consumers) in the three districts of Barak Valley have not been able to buy sugar from ration shops and the stated reason has been that trains could not ply in the hills. The price of sugar has risen abnormally in the open market due to which sugar for public distribution is completely missing, Grahok Suraksha Samiti sources said.

Normally, the sugar allotted for three districts of Barak Valley is 23,000 quintals against the government price of Rs 3 crores. Since December 2008, sugar has been unavailable in ration shops due to the railway strike. In open market, the cost of sugar is Rs 28.00 per kg whereas in the public distribution system the cost of sugar is Rs 13.00 per kg. Awareness campaign on Swine flu held in Jiribum

SILCHAR, July 5: An awareness campaign on Swine Flu was held at Jiribum town hall today organized by the United Club of Manipur. The meeting was sponsored by Jiribum Veterinary Department Deputy director S Thoiba. The chief guest on the occasion was Jiribum Municipal Council chairman M Ratan Singh. MPSSDPO O Menjor Singh adorned the occasion as the guest of honour.
