Cachar gears up to tackle drought-like situation

SILCHAR, July 24: State Urban Development Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala has urged upon the farmers of Cachar district to seek assistance from the Agriculture and Irrigation Department during the current drought-like situation.

The minister while participating in a district-level meeting at Silchar today for taking measures in this drought-like situation, said that the Agriculture and Irrigation Department should jointly fight the situation and mitigate the suffering of people by boosting up agricultural production. The meeting decided to supply potash to farmers to save standing Ahu and other crops and to boost up production.

The Power Department has assured that they will give unlimited power to four lift irrigation schemes in the district. Moreover, they have agreed to supply power between 5 to 7.30 AM for running all the lift irrigation schemes. The PHE Department informed that they will install 197 Tara Pump and 20 wells in the drought-hit areas.

Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Gautom Ganguly, has urged upon the departments to identify priority areas. Parliamentary Secretary Ajit Singh and three MLAs - Bethika Deb, AR Mazumdar and Dr Rumi Nath representing ASEB, Irrigation Department, Agriculture Department and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department were also present in the meeting.
