Dimasa villagers continue hunger strike

SILCHAR, June16: At least 75 Dimasa families from Kalinagar under Lakhipur PS bordering trouble-torn NC Hills district has resorted to hunger strike at their makeshift refugee camp at Kumacherra.

These Dimasa people, who are mostly farmers, had taken shelter in Kumacherra since last April, following ethnic clashes in the neighbouring district. As a result, they had to miss their cultivation season. Now, with the onset of the monsoon, the displaced farmers want to go back to their village for cultivation and have sought security arrangement from the Cachar district administration for the purpose.

The Dimasa villagers, under the banner of Bharatiyo Krishak Maha Samiti, started a hunger strike from Tuesday to press forth their demands.

It had earlier been reported that Lakhipur SDO Madhumita Choudhury had visited Kumacherra camp on Wednesday and the agitators had subsequently withdrawn their hunger strike. Sripad Dhar of the Bharatiyo Krishak Maha Samiti today claimed that the Dimasa villagers had not withdrawn their agitation as their demand was still being overlooked by the administration.
